A Member of Parliament in the UK is urging the government to invest more money in research into asbestos related diseases, warning that over the next couple of decades the number of cases of diseases such as mesothelioma, which is an asbestos related cancer, could soar.
John Battle, the MP for Leeds West, has said that the government needs to invest more in research, and has called on the Health Secretary, Andy Burnham, to increase funding for the Department of Health to make this additional research possible.
Over recent months thousands of people in the UK have signed a petition calling for an asbestos research facility to be built, and Mr Battle has called for the centre to be created in his constituency, which is Leeds. He said: “There is no reason why it shouldn’t be in Leeds. We have got a good cancer unit and a good medical school.”
Mr Battle went on to say: “There is going to be a massive increase in mesothelioma cases in the next 20 years, which means now is the time to get on with it.”
