There is little doubt in my mind that my favorite genre of music is the wonderful world of Prog Rock. I was hooked back in the late 60’s, one listen to Emerson Lake and Palmer and I was hopelessly addicted.

Shawn Gordon is the president of the best known US prog rock label, I can pretty much guarantee that if you have a collection of prog you are going to be the proud owner of some albums from Prog Rock Records.

One of the most recent releases out of the label is Terra Incognita: Beyond The Horizon, and a spectacular work it is. I liked it so much that I anted to pursue an interview with the band. I contacted my PR connection and he got back to me a little later and suggested that I interview Shawn Gordon about it. I was a little surprised, I checked the CD credits and Shawn does not play on the album, but rather is listed as executive producer. I had wanted to interview Shawn anyway about Prog in general, so this looked like a good way to cover both subjects.

The mystery surrounding Rosewell Six was solved early in the interview. The band was created specifically for this project. Shawn wanted to create a ‘Rock Opera’ in the classic prog tradition. The album is a musical rendition of best selling Sci-Fi author Kevin J. Anderson’s new book Terra Incognita: Beyond The Horizon.  Kevin J. Anderson has written many, many fine books, and it is estimated that he has sold over 20 million copies, and his books have been translated into 30 languages. That is quite the resume!

You can listen to the entire interview online, and we have a couple of bonuses for you. Firstly you will get to hear a great track from the album, Ishalem, this one track encapsulates prog rock better than a 1000 words could ever do. The second bonus, and it came as a complete surprise to me was that Keven J. Anderson also joined us for about half of the interview. It transpires that Kevin was very much a part of bringing his story into the musical medium.

This is one interview that you will not want to miss. If you love prog rock you will get to listen to one of it’s guru’s, and if you love Sci-Fi you will get to hear from on of today’s leading authors. Now that is a combination that cannot be beat. The recording is here.
