A friend of mine recently purchased at the Beacon for what I initially thought was an outrageously low price (< $100K), unfortunately he is now hearing rumblings that he is going to see his monthly maintenance jump to nearly $1,500 a month as there are not nearly enough units occupied to cover the property tax and common maintenance on the complex. Personally the real downside to the Beacon seems to be its location which is one of the more dangerous areas in Jersey City (you can literally see hand to hand drug activity 24X7 less than a block away). Overall this complex seems to be an artifact of the housing bubble where the mantra of if you build it they will come, seemed to win out over the more traditional, location, location, location.

As a "Beaconite", I object to the characterization in your editorial. We are assimilating with the neighborhood as much as we can. There is certainly a difference in taste for our consumption compared to those around us, and many business are starting to find ways to cater to both.

We are not shielded and closed down as you suggest. Stand by the entrance, you'll see us coming and going on a frequent basis.
