Little Nevaeh (which spells heaven backwards) Buchanan was only five years old. She was outside playing on her scooter at the Charlotte Arms apartments where she lived in Monroe Michigan when she disappeared on May 24th.
Thursday a little body was found and they have been identified that of a child and the police feel that it is possible that it is the body of little Nevaeh. The family expects to find out for sure today or tomorrow. An autopsy has been performed on her but there have been no results of that released yet.
Police claim that there are two men listed as persons of interest which are already behind bars on unrelated charges but no one has been arrested so far.
Jennifer Buchanan , who is the mother of Nevaeh, told a Detroit TV Station that she is still holding on to the hopes that the child found is not Nevaeh. “I still have hope. There is no indefinite, like confirmation, as to if it is her or not. Someone could have took her. Somebody… I’m completely clueless, I don’t know as to who, I don’t want to point fingers at anyone.†Buchanan is requesting to keep her face out of the cameras now.
Jennifer Buchanan expressed to the Detroit Feel Press that she didn’t have anything to do with her daughter’s disappearance. Her mother, Sherry Buchanan gained custody of little Nevaeh when Jennifer was found guilty of breaking into homes to support her drug habit. She lived there in Monroe with her mother and Nevaeh in their apartment.
A body was found by fisherman. Someone had put the child there in a concrete covered grave on the banks of a Michigan river. The child found was said to be of the same gender, age and about the same size as Nevaeh was. She was also wearing a shirt that looked like the one Nevaeh was reportedly wearing when she was playing on her scooter in the parking lot of their apartment complex the day she disappeared.
When speaking of whoever did this, Diana Lawson, Nevaeh’s aunt said, “I hope and pray to God that they never rest and be able to sleep without seeing her face. That child didn’t deserve that. That child didn’t deserve anything.†She says that the persons of interest that the police have questioned should suffer if they had anything to do with Nevaeh’s disappearance or death. “I can’t say they did it… but if they did, I hope they are punished,†she said. “I hope they suffer like that little girl.â€
Funeral arrangements have been delayed until identification of the child is official according to the girl’s grandmother. Jennifer Buchanan said she was overwhelmed by several days of uncertainty. She does want to see her daughter one more time though, no matter what.
How many more children are going to lose their lives to these sick people? What harm could this little 5 year old girl have been to anyone? What kind of a threat could she have been to someone that they felt the need to kill her?
I hope the person or persons that did this pay dearly for what they have done. I hope they are caught and tortured. They should be thrown in a shallow grave alive and covered with cement too and see what it is like. Let them beg for their life to be spared. I seriously doubt anyone would argue with me that this is happening way too often and something needs to be done. Stricter laws? Stricter punishments? What will it take?
I say no more of this slapping on the wrist and letting them out of prison for good behavior after a few years, cutting their sentence down. I say throw away the key once they are convicted. Don’t let them back out on the streets. None of this crap about wearing an ankle bracelet so they can be watched. There are so many ways of getting out of that. It isn’t good enough. Keep them in prison with absolutely NO chance of getting out. Deny any parole hearings. Don’t give them a second chance. Don’t give them luxuries once behind bars either. Why do they have the right to have the best meals or the store to buy things like candy and chips and clothes? Why do they need all that while in prison? Take their days and nights of freedom away from them forever.
These days someone in prison have it better than a lot of people I have seen on the streets. They get their three meals a day, shower, and their TV and activity time. They always have a bed to sleep in and a roof over their head. And these are the people that killed someone else. Homeless people that have done nothing wrong but get caught up in the depression of today’s world and end up losing their jobs and homes and have nothing left. A lot of them have done NOTHING to deserve being on the streets to live. Yet someone can go and kill someone and given life in prison, and have the life that a lot of homeless people would love to have.
I pray that one day someone will make new laws. Let’s stop worrying about what other countries have going on with them and start worrying about what is going on in our own country or in our own home town or in someone’s neighbor’s yards. Americans need to step back and look at what is happening around us. To kill an adult is bad enough but my God, to kill an innocent child is horrendous. When I heard they had found what they believe to be little 5 year old Nevaeh, I cried. Even if this child ends up not being Nevaeh, it is still someone else’s child.
My heart and my prayers go out to Nevaeh and to her grieving family. In this past year I have become more aware of these kind of cases and the more involved I get the harder it seems to get. Please everyone join me in a prayer for these innocent children. I pray that someone finds an answer soon to save them. God bless each and every one of them.

Update June 9, 2009 – The body found Thursday encased in cement near the River Raisin has been positively identified as Nevaeh Buchanan.
The police crime lab used DNA to verify the remains. Â

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI know there have been times when LE and CPS here in Michigan have let people down, but I say that more times than not, they do a good job investigating and following up on disgusting crimes like these.
There are some very dedicated LE here in MI and I have faith they will catch the perpetrator/s of this horrible crime.
Unlike Other cases where evidence and leads have been ignored for Months on end, LE here in MI can usually be commended for their strong support of the community.
If the body that was found Is in fact, that of little Nevaeh, my prayers go out to the family and may the sweet little princess RIP.
How about parents WATCH their children and NOT let them play outside alone for hours.
jan i totaly agree with you our children are living in fear, they cant play outside anymore..they arent free to walk to school or the movies…something has to change..thank you for continuing your quest on a better future for our children, whats next for them implants??? not fair at all they have done nothing to have to deal with that! better yet put the sickoo’s behind bars, there seems to be more and more of them with the continued drug use of people our children our at steak here and it needs to stop!!!

I missed all the wonderfull comments from other people.
In 1989 my husband of 20 years went to prison for molesting our 3 children ( 2 girls 1 boy) in the state of florida. Due to their ages he could have easily gotten the death penality for what he did. Instead, he received a total of 25 years for the oldest and 15 years for each of the other 2 to run concurrent for a total of 55 years. He served 10 and when he was released moved into a womans home with a 10 year old child. He had the best medical care, 3 square meals a day, a roof over his head etc. Us? I had no help from any available system..no medicaid insurance, no food stamps..in fact no help from family either since they believed him the victim. I worked 3 jobs to support those children and raised them to be fine upstanding citizens without his help. I will never understand the mix up between victim and offender. And I will never understand how a mother, who knows the history of a man she is dating can support him over the childs welfare. Once an offender always an offender. Lock them up/ put them on an island together, or at the bottom of the sea I don’t care where but keep them away from our innocent children who do not deserve the pain and anguish of living with what has happened to them daily for the rest of their lives.. if they survive!

Here in The Netherlands its not better, woman are often not believed and kicked to the slander curb.
But from what I understand is that you survived, and eventually came out stronger tho bruised.
I bet your children love you to pieces for guarding them and loving them perhaps even more than in a 2 parent household.

I thank you for daring to mention praying….it’s no longer politically correct or proper to mention prayer. And I for one believe THAT is what is happening to our children – God is calling for our attention – how many children and other horrible things will have to happen before we turn back to the only one who can help our children, our nation, ourselves.
The news Friday evening was they think that possibly more than one person was involved. What about the mother though, she has to take some responsibilty, she put her child in danger. She should be held accountable also.
I agree jen that it might not be political correct or apropriate to mention praying.
But in Haleighs case the damage is done, she is missing.
Due to lack of parental care she went missing.
God is calling for our attention indeed but I believe in prayer for comfort and hope.
I also hope that every time a child is murdered or missing or kidnapped or is living in horrible conditions its a least a eye opener to others, to look around their own little square where they keep their children in how safe it is for them.

Denise, wow, that is awful what happened to you. I’m glad your children had you to take care of them. But your right, you have to spend your life struggling while the criminal gets a roof and meals, and of course gets out early. It is so unfair. I wish our lawmakers would toughen the penalties for good. Those groups who advocate rights for the criminals over the victims need to be put in their place and done away with. Our children need to come first!

If I’m understanding this right, Custody of the Child was given to the Grandmother, due to the Mother breaking into homes and because of her Drug Habits, (meaning she likely would associate with less than desirable characters).
If the Child was living With the Grandma because the Mother was Unfit, THEN WHAT WAS THE MOTHER DOING LIVING IN THE RESIDENCE?
WHO was Supposed to be in charge of little Navaeh while she played outside WITH NO ADULT SUPERVISION?
WHY was the Mother of the Child allowed by the ‘custodial parent’, or by authorities mind you, to Reside in the same apartment?
I really don’t like pointing fingers but it seems someone (and I don’t mean LE) is at fault for not protecting this child once given custody of her.
Aside from that, there is never a time you can leave 5 year olds unattended to play outside. Too much can happen! And that doesn’t even include the sick things people might do to them. WHAT IF SHE SIMPLY FELL OFF HER BIKE? what IF she were mowed down by a hit n run driver in that parking lot?
WHY WAS SHE UNSUPERVISED AT 5 YRS OLD?

The child’d mother stated repeatedly that Nevaeh and the sex-offender father figure only had contact 15% of the time and she was always there. What she failed to account for is the other 85% of the time he was around. The grandmother works, so who was supervising the child?
The suddenly oh-so concerned dad wasn’t concerned enough to keep current on his child support, whether he saw his daughter or not.
So much for the grieving blame traders.
i like how merciless Dianna Lawson (Nevaeh’s Aunt) is. I wonder would she apply that same hard line (no Parole/probation etc.) to people who break an entering to support their drug habit? Oh, yeah, that’s different. I think to many people are excusing the Mother and the Grandmother. The Mother already gave up her parenting rights. People keep saying how could the Mother let sex offenders around this child but the real question is how could the Grandmother let the Mother around this child? After all the Grandmother had custody and was to be responsible for keeping her away from druggies and felons and to watch her when out in public. I say throw the Mother and Grandmother in jail and lets check and see if Diana Lawson has any skeletons in her closet so we can put her in one of those parole-less, no food and no store having jails.

I can’t believe they haven’t made an arrest yet. With all the the people out looking no one checked the river. Helicopters were flying all over the city (especially the shopping districts) putting on a show for the public but no one even bothered to fly over the river. The cops are always too busy huddling up to one another to actually do any police work. Wonder if Tillman is worried about getting re-elected yet? 99% of the Raisan River is private property, so it would take less than an hour to check the river access in this county that isn’t. But then we wouldn’t be able to see the parade of Blue n Red lights running around Wal-Mart and K-Mart

In 2006 my then 14yo was planning to committ suicide bcuz she was being molested by her bio-dad.I found this out in her diary.He got her drunk and high off pot @ age 12 and took her virginity.During my daughters ordeal he infected her with HPV[GENITAL WARTS].When this sick sac of trash was arrested[no bond after I pressed charges]he not only denied what he did but he referred to my daughter as crazy,jealous of his relations with other females,and damaged goods.Bottom line the system failed us he got off scott free.Never served a day after trial, he was found not guilty for ruining this child,and his family now hates her bcuz they said i put her up to lie on him.this was the second time he got away with molesting a child slipped through the courts.Changes have to be made.I know 100% this jackass did this and he will do it again bcuz nothig has been done 2 stop him.
Pinkey yes the law failed you and your daughter. The law fails many many children and there is no recourse. There is no way a victim can be restored to a time when they were not violated. Nothing will change until we the people DEMAND things change. No pedophile should EVER get the benefit of any doubt. If a child accuses an adult, the adult should have to submit to every test available to prove their not guilty. There is more punishment for stealing cars and money then for violating a child. It is a sick world.

I wouldn’t mind seeing sexual predators get the death penalty. Prosecute these animals under the law of treason, they are most definitely compromising this country. There is no more danger then the danger within. Surely the way these lawyers twist the laws they could twist a few to protect our kids. Yes its extreme but so is the deaths of all these beautiful children.
