Yes, well, m2c, the problem is that religion is thicker than water. Are you too naive to see what happened in Pakistan is the norm for muslims? One may say this, but behind the back the fingers are crossed.

Repairing relations? There is a Jihad flame buring brightly in the Middle East, and that flame will burn everyone attempting to put it out or lower it, regardless of any label assigned (terrorist or diplomat). Mark my words.

When the news shows Middle East protests it amazes me how many men are yelling and waving guns. If they were so repressed by dictators, how are they allowed to do that? Can you imagine a protest here waving machine guns? I have a .22 target pistol and it would never occur to me to wave it at anyone; I would be shot. I'm sure they were not filming terrorists, but they don't look peaceful either.

I think that culture admires cunning, as it stems from tribal warfare, so outsmarting the other guy was key to survival. Here, we admire honor, your handshake is your bond integrity, and that communication is far better than war. I don't see these two core principles of living reconciled, but believe there are underlying reasons for our strategy in the Middle East. It's a chess game and very rarely what it seems at face value. Obama won't like it, but his approach to the Middle East will have to be forceful.

Geez, gina, I think your politics are eating up your brain cells. You're not even understanding the point (because of your politics - yeah, Bush did SUCH A GREAT JOB! NOT!)

What the President is talking about is repairing the US's relations with predominantly Muslim countries so that we can work together to ferret out and destroy (or at least reduce) the muslim terrorist fanatics.
That sounds like a much better approach than making enemies of all Muslims all over the world which people in this country did - and somewhat understandably - after 9/11.
Don't you understand that MOST Muslims are NOT in favor of the fanatical terrorists? Or do you paint all Muslims as terrorists? Shame on you.
Most want to live in peace as we do. So working with those people and those countries can be very effective. But we do have some apologies to make - perhaps you should go first. Something like - "Sorry, I thought all Muslims were terrorists. My mistake." It would be more accurate than anything in your article.

Thanks guys! I agree Val, that talking first to fulfill a promise should be tried, but LLB said it, talking without action is not doing anything at all.

All the ground we gained through tough diplomatic policies and all the blood shed on foreign soil goes for naught when we already KNOW that talking doesn't work. It has already been proven that Jihadist give no honor to their perceived enemies and they would as soon lie to us as eat a date.

I agree with you Gina; talking will not work. Having said that, he may be fulfilling a promise that he would try talking first, knowing full well that he will have to back it up with force. That's politics. The Middle East will think he is a weaker President IMO, but with our great military advisors they will soon discover that he "walks softly, but carries a big stick". At least I hope so.
