A petition has recently been handed in at the UK Prime Minister’s residence at 10 Downing Street by a group led by a surgeon. The petition relates to a campaign that is calling for a specialist asbestos research centre to be created, and it has been signed by over twenty two thousand people.

The petition was organised by John Edwards, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital. The purpose of the centre would be to collate research and data from around the UK, and try to come up with more effective treatments and even a cure for the asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma.

One official from an industry campaign group that was also represented said: “Mesothelioma kills six people every day in the UK yet there is currently no government funding for research into asbestos-related diseases.”

Dr Edwards also commented about the need to prioritise on asbestos research, stating: “Mesothelioma is far and away the least-researched of the top 20 cancers in the UK. Funding for a UK National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases is a priority.”
