I seethed in anger last March, when Nancy Pelosi helped to jiggle the votes for the Democratic convention so that the super-delegates and the caucuses would be able to nullify the popular votes in the primaries.
This enabled the hard left, who had hijacked a lot of the caucuses, to have their candidate Barack Obama win, despite the fact (rarely noted by an Obama adoring press) that Hillary’s popular vote in the primaries was even, perhaps higher than that garnered by Obama.
Those left behind? The blue collar Democrats, who ended up voting for Obama over a clueless McCain, but who still distrusted him, not based on a racism (as the press suggests all the time) but because they had too work hard for everything, while he had connections that let him go to Ivy League colleges, while our kids were stuck working our way through community colleges.
Presumably, any Democrat who imitates FDR will garner their support in a recession, yet the threat of terrorism could change the game at any time.
And that, my friends, is the problem with Pelosi and the left wing of the Democratic party.
Right now, Nancy Pelosi has egg on her face because she came out strongly against “torture” and tried to blame it all on Bush.
The problem?
Twofold.
One: The NYTimes has confirmed her early knowledge of the program
The deepening dispute over what Ms. Pelosi was told in September 2002 has challenged her credibility and raised new questions about whether she passed up an early opportunity to expose the Bush administration’s harsh treatment of detainees.
According to this interpretation, her problem is political: In a party hijacked by the extreme anti war left, she should have “played politics” with sensitive security information.
Yet neither the Times nor Pelosi see the real problem about her early knowledge: that maybe she didn’t “spill the beans” because she knew about some very scary threats, and even though as a good Catholic she knew torture was wrong, she figured that a small compromise was needed to keep terrorists from blowing up the Golden Gate bridge.
And therein lies her problem number two.
When Pelosi started playing dumb, Darth Vader Cheyney is reminding everyone that she knew about all those terrorist threats and approved of a limited “coercive interrogation” program. He even called for the CIA to release their documents showing what they had learned, and how many lives had been saved by coercive interrogation.
And the problem has two other aspects to it.
One: The CIA has fought back: leaking those nice memos and even nice guy Leon Panetta has corrected her in public.
You think the Keystone cops Republicans play dirty, you haven’t faced the CIA.
And then there is the President.
Either President Obama lied to his anti war supporters, or else he grew up when he saw some of the scary threats out there and changed his pre election policies on Iraq, Guantanamo and other Bush programs.
Indeed, to prove he has the cojones to play hardball, he has appointed Hillary Clinton to be his Secretary of State.
So President Obama has faced reality, and grown up.
But Nancy Pelosi? No growing up here, folks. She is not only playing politics with national security, but she is lying about it.
There is, of course, a way out of it: She could honestly say:
Look. There are very bad threats out there, and after 911, I silenced my conscience and approved of torture to save lives.
However, since then, I have examined my conscience and have repented of my actions.
However, don’t hold your breath for her to try to be honest.
She is, after all, a politician who has betrayed her church and her fellow feminist to gain power. Why should she start worrying about her soul at this late date?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI sometimes watch our elected congress men and women debate on CSPAN. I am an Independent and am open to intelligent and honest debate of issues. By and large I find that Republicans are disingenuous and not very well informed. Most of all they do not seem to be very smart. Democrats, on the other hand, seem to be more intelligent and display a passion about issues that goes to the core of the well-being of our nation. The GOP seems only interested in finding ways to undermine the present administration and their Democratic colleagues; along with being very short-sighted in most of their stands on issues. They are also constantly being outsmarted by the Democrats. I get the feeling that Nancy Pelosi knows exactly what she is doing. She is laying a trap for the Republicans and they are walking right into it. They cannot help themselves.
Two points:
1) Rare indeed is the congressional conscience that is sufficiently well calibrated to put complex moral considerations above political risk calculations.
2)”…but who still distrusted him, not based on a racism (as the press suggests all the time) but because they had too work hard for everything, while he had connections that let him go to Ivy League colleges…”
Since I don’t hear any similarly righteous complaints about the advantages enjoyed by politicians from wealthier, traditionally White families (such as legacy and other systems of privilege that let plenty of illiterati attend Ivy universities), it might be worth asking yourself if you were half as concerned that Al Gore might not have won the highest marks on his academic jaunt through the nation’s elite schools (a record of mediocrity from St. Albans in DC, to Harvard to Vanderbilt). If the answer is no, you might not want to erase the racism option from the list of motivators for the rabid Hillary-ites just yet.
STOP! The Attacks On Speaker Pelosi
Last time they tried to attack Speaker Pelosi ( second in line to the President of the United States) it was about her alleged abuse of military transportation. This attack as expected turned out to be bogus. It turned out that the previous Speaker (Hastert - a Republican) made far more use of military transportation. It turned out that Speaker Pelosi was possibly overly prudent and too self-restrained in her use of military transportation.
Now Republicans are trying to attack her about allegedly having been told by the Bush administration about things she was not told about, like water boarding. Republicans are attacking her because she is being so effective at getting the peoples work done in congress, like healthcare. And Republicans want to stop her. Don’t put up with that. Every time they attack Speaker Pelosi they are attacking you and the rest of the American people. If they go after her, go after them even harder.
They are trying to con Speaker Pelosi and the American people. And here is how it works. Approximately 6 years ago CIA had a briefing with Pelosi and congress, but DID NOT tell congress and Pelosi that the Bush administration was using torture ( water boarding ) on detainees. Then the Bush administration sent in Porter Goss to head the CIA and to destroy, and doctor records in part to make it look like Pelosi, and the Democrats in congress were onboard with the illegal torture of detainees by the Bush administration.
See, apparently at these intelligence briefings members of congress are not allowed to take notes. And if they do, they are not allowed to keep them. Apparently the CIA makes notes, but the members of congress are not allowed to see those notes either. And they can’t tell anybody about what was said at the briefings. But the CIA can come back six years later and claim they told members of congress something six years ago that they did not tell them at that time. And they can use falsified notes to substantiate their claim. Planting disinformation was the type of thing the CIA became very good at during the time Porter Goss was a young CIA agent. Just gotta love it.
If you will remember, their was a mass exodus of senior CIA officials after Porter Goss took over. And the complaint at the time was that longtime, highly experienced agents were being replaced by other people based mostly on their political loyalties to the Bush administration and their extreme right-wing ideologies. Which is just exactly what you need if you want people who will be willing to break the law under orders. Sound familiar? I don’t think you can trust any CIA records after Goss took over.
I have nothing but the utmost respect, and admiration for the dedicated and patriotic members of OUR! Central Intelligence Agency. When the Bush administration betrayed one of OUR! agents (Mrs. Wilson) it made me boiling MAD! I think our new Director Pennetta has got some internal investigation and agency house cleaning to do. If you backtrack on the individuals that have been making the false attacks on Speaker Pelosi, and trace who they have had contact and conversations with, you should be able to connect the dots and catch your conspirators.
The key that the CIA records are falsified is Sen. Bob Graham and his journal, and common sense.
By the way, I think Mr. Pennetta is an excellent choice to head the CIA and fix it.
They are trying to kill healthcare reform. And continue our healthcare crisis. Don’t put up with that.
PASS THE WORD.
To The Congress Of The United States:
If it is true that you are not allowed to have or make any permanent records of your intelligence briefings for later clarifications, and protection, that is ridiculous. That leaves all of you vulnerable to just this type of scam that is being perpetrated on Speaker Pelosi. So here is what you can do about it to protect your-selves in the future.
Members should be able to make notes and other recordings of these briefings. Then these briefings and recordings can be reduced to a computer file that can then be encrypted and digitally signed with a detached digital signature using key encryption. Then each of you can encrypt, and sign each others copy of the record that can only be unlocked with the other parties key. And both parties copies can be verified with each others copy of the files detached digital signature.
Very easy. Very secure. No more exposure to falsified records down the road.
You see, it almost doesn’t really matter what CIA allegedly did or didn’t tell Speaker Pelosi, and congress. Because the briefing format is so deficient of any checks, balances, or verification that all we know is that all external briefing accounts support Speaker Pelosi’s version of events. Pelosi and congress should have been given every benefit of the doubt. And that should have been it.
There are many other booby traps out there set for you congress. Be careful.
God Bless You

p.s. I still think the timing of Sen. Bob Graham’s ruptured cerebral aneurism was suspicious. More so now, than before.
Director Panetta’s letter to CIA rank and file failed to mention Speaker Pelosi by name which is the give away.
And why would the speaker commit what amounts to political suicide by continuing to insist the agency disclose in detail everything related to the program, not just the summary of a single meeting she attended seven years ago?
Unless she is pretty sure she knows where the cards will land when the hand plays out
It’s CIA political appointee’s, the mid level managers, the ones put in place when Bush was in charge, who are scared witless at this point.
Not the rank and file grunts who risk their lives to protect the country.
Keep in mind most of the torture was done by the “contractors” those who quit the CIA and went into the private sector only after they set the program up.
George Bush and his Boss Dick Cheney are despised by covert agents because they committed the unforgivable sin of leaking a covert agents identity and they did so for partisan political reasons.
The GOP is being lead by the nose on this one and the Gotcha moment will come in a couple weeks.
