Deputy resigns after lying alleged

A Putnam sheriff’s detective under investigation for lying under oath has resigned.

Sheriff Jeff Hardy suspended Richard Campbell on April 9 and Campbell, a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, resigned five days later.

Sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Dick Schauland announced Campbell’s resignation on Friday.

“Sheriff Hardy believes that an officer’s integrity is of extreme importance,” Schauland said. “He has taken a strong stance that any untruthfulness, in violation of the sheriff’s office general order, will not be tolerated.”

Campbell, in an interview Friday with the Daily News, asked the community for forgiveness.

“I’m a good person, I’m a Christian,” he said. “We make mistakes, but those folks out there, I just want those when they read this to forgive me.”

Campbell, 34, said he hoped to return to the military. He also worked at the Palatka Police Department before joining the sheriff’s office.

The situation “is really rough,” Campbell said.

“It’s just been really hard for my family,” he said tearfully. “I had 17 years to work toward having a reputation and being a good officer and having integrity, and I don’t want this to end everything for my family.”

Meanwhile, prosecutors will decide whether criminal charges will be filed, said Assistant State Attorney Joe Boatwright, manager of the Putnam County state attorney’s office.

“It is under review by our office,” he said Friday.

Campbell’s promising career nosedived during a drug trafficking trial in Palatka.

Schauland said Campbell discussed testimony with an unidentified drug task force agent in the hall outside Judge Ed Hedstrom’s courtoom even though Hedstrom had ordered witnesses not to discuss the case.

Someone overheard them talking and Hedstrom was notified, Schauland said.

“When the court learned of the violation, Judge Hedstrom called each officer into the courtroom separately,” Schauland said. “The other officer admitted the violation, but Campbell lied to Judge Hedstrom and denied the conversation took place.”

Sheriff’s Chief of Staff Rick Ryan suspended Campbell later that day.

Schauland said an internal investigation found Campbell “had indeed violated the sheriff’s office general order by ‘departing from the truth in giving testimony.’”

Results of the internal investigation will be sent to state Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, which could revoke Campbell’s law enforcement certification, Schauland said.

Largest Drug Arrests in History of Palatka, Putnam County, Florida

Eleven people were arrested and approximately $24 million worth of cocaine and marijuana were seized as a result of a recent drug investigation in Palatka, Putnam County, Florida (which is about an hour south of Jacksonville, Florida), according to an article on Firstcoastnews.com. The cocaine and marijuana drug investigation involved local Putnam County police as well as officials from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to the article, the cocaine and marijuana as well as cash, vehicles and electronic equipment were stored in two houses on San Jose Avenue in East Palatka, Florida.

It is unclear from the article how they arrived at the $24 million dollar value for the drugs, but clearly this case involves a significant amount of drugs. In a case of this size with multiple law enforcement agencies and many defendants, there are likely to be several issues regarding to whom the police can actually attribute the illegal drugs. Widespread arrests such as these often involve people who may have little or no direct connection to the drugs in the hopes that the police can get incriminating statements from them, flip them as witnesses or somehow tie them to drugs found at a particular location.

It is not uncommon for police to use shaky evidence from unreliable co-defendants to try and incriminate others on whom the police have little to no evidence. This occurred in a recent ecstasy trafficking case involving a Shorstein & Lasnetski, LLC client. Once we uncovered the true nature of the alleged evidence and the unreliability of the state’s witnesses in that case, it was clear that the state could not prove their drug trafficking case against our client and the charges were dropped

Don’t get me wrong… I am not saying Ron searched ‘a lot’ ever… I find it suspicious that he never went out on his own to look… this is his town… I would have been everywhere myself and people would have been asking to tag along with me… in my opinion, he searched half-heartedly for a very short time…

Ron did look for Haleigh…for a few days… then about 2 weeks into the search, he stopped looking because ‘no one came to search with him’…prior to that he was tagging along with a search party… as far as I know, he has not been looking since that date… he did get married shortly afterward, then flew to NY to be on TV, but refused to answer most of the questions and shook his head menacingly whenever Misty gave an answer he did not like…

…but… Only God Can Judge Him…

I, too, have been wondering about Ron’s mother… she was very vocal at first and appeared almost nightly on Nancy Grace… I can only assume that the reason we don’t hear much from her now is that the mainstream media including NG have pretty much abandoned this case… which I think is a direct result of Ron screaming ‘Stay Out of My Personal Life’… at that point, he pretty much cut out all the media… which I think is really sad for Haleigh… the media coverage could have continued full force for much longer and continued to pull in ratings for the networks… look how long the search for Caylee lasted…

This case is truly heartbreaking.

I’m just glad things seem to have calmed down for the most part and folks are back to discussing what really matters to us all.

Emotions run high on these subjects and often times it serves us well to step back before responding to something that we feel is very offensive or so off the wall and unexpected that you think that person must be crazy. I’ve seen some posts on here that I’ve typed up a response and then said to myself “now what purpose would that serve to send? It would only add fuel to the flame”.

I really do enjoy reading your write-ups - keep up the good work!

All of us need to support Kim P, Cobra and Crew. They are the only ones looking for the child while the father and his child bride have moved, on donation money and seem to be living high on the hog off the money, rather than search for the daughter. I never saw or heard of the father looking for the daughter. If he was so convinced the cousin in Tennessee has the daughter, why wasn’t he on the road to Tennessee?

He offered up his services, much like Lenoard Padilla did for the Anthony case. (they are both media whores, at least LP admits that fact)

Unlike Cobra though, Lennny flew to FL many of times at his own expense and paid all his own expenses, he never begged the public to fund his expenses.

When you volunteer your time and services, for whatever the reason….you don’t ask or expect others to pay for your gas, your food, your lodging. If the time has come that you can’t afford to help any longer, you go home.

I hear people say “without Cobra, we wouldn’t know about Nay Nay, Amber, WGB, etc.”…

What does knowing about them do for the case from a readers/web-sleuther/public point of view? It doesn’t help find Haleigh it just creates more of a circus with even more rumors and gossip being tossed about as facts.

Just because we didn’t know about them doesn’t mean LE wasn’t aware of all these new “characters”. They are keeping their cards close to their chest. As they should.
If they had something they needed wanted us to know, or they needed the public’s help with, they would call a press conference or issue a press release.

The parents were still giving interviews and still supporting each other until Geraldo and Kim P and her “crew” showed up and started slinging mud. All that did was shift the focus off of Haleigh. Which is sad.
