Over the years, prolific director Michel Gondry has amassed a pretty incredible body of work, from iconic White Stripes videos to the undeniable genius of 2004’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Looking with a creative eye (or four of them, as the cover of his latest DVD release shows) Gondry has the ability to create vivid worlds within worlds, bringing his audiences along on often playful journeys through imaginative landscapes of varying colors and shapes. In this latest release (a self-relesaed follow up to 2003’s The Work of Director Michel Gondry), Gondry has included 20 videos from his impressive catalogue.

And each video reminds viewers why Gondry is the admired director that he is. From the deceptively simplistic one-take rooftop video for Michael Andrews’ “Mad World” – a video that features a group of school children creating moving images by joining hands – to the elaborate flip-flopping story-telling in Sheryl Crow’s “A Change Would Do You Good” (featuring a star-studded cast including Jeff Garlin, Andy Dick, and Molly Shannon), Gondry manages to reinvent his own bonkers style in each new outing. Whether using stop-motion for Dick Annegarn’s “Soleil Du Soir” or an entirely knitted world (which I actually saw on display in a New York museum several years ago) for Steriogram’s “Walkie Talkie Man,” Gondry has a unique capacity for drawing viewers in to his strange creations.

These 20 music videos are each impressive in their own way and even those outside of Gondry’s fanbase should find something to like here. Radiohead, Bjork, Beck, The White stripes, Sinead O’Connor, Wyclef Jean, and The Black Crowes are all included, among others.

There’s also a powerful selection of bonus footage, including behind the scenes footage from several of the videos, a clip of “The Simpson”‘s parody of The White Stripes video and Michel Gondry solving a Rubik’s cube with his feet.

And if all of that isn’t enough for you, the elaborate old-school menu – in which you navigate through the selections as Gondry’s bladder-happy white dog – is worth the cost of admission alone.
