Around 2002, a Wisconsin man named Dan O’Connell had uncovered information about a local priest who had been molesting children. Later that year, he and a friend were found murdered. Police investigated the murder and questioned the priest that was named in the information only to have the priest commit suicide in December 2004 before charges could be filed against him. Now, a lawsuit has been filed by the surviving relatives of O’Connell against all Roman Catholic dioceses and it’s Bishop in the United States. The lawsuit seeks to force every Bishop to come forward and name priests that are proven, admitted and credibly accused abusive. The lawsuit estimates the number to be around 5,000. 17 Bishops were served with papers last week, within the next couple of weeks that number will be up to 178. The lawsuit is not seeking any kind of monetary awards or damages, just names though it is currently unclear what they plan to do with the names once they have them.
