Some commentators consider these people, many of whom lost the opportunity to attend university, China’s “lost generation”.

Among the 'lost generation' come out many China's top political and business leaders, of course large proportion of them were former Red Guards. The students enrolled in colleges and universities in 1978 - 1980 were considered the most brilliant due to many of them were from the so-called 'Old Three Classes' - another name of the 'lost generation', because they were relatively solid in educational background, mature, better comprehension and high capability of correct thinking and analysis.
