Over recent years countries such as the United States and the UK have seen the level of litigation relating to asbestos related diseases – in particular the asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma – increase, with more and more people being diagnosed with such diseases and going on to file lawsuits.

According to a recent report Australia is now also set to see the level of mesothelioma litigation increase over the coming few years. Figures that were recently released showed that there is expected to be around eight hundred new cases filed over mesothelioma this year in Australia.

The figure is a sharp rise compared to the six hundred new cases that were filed in Australia in 2005. Nearly twenty five percent of all lawsuits filed over asbestos in Australia stem from Victoria, and many of these relate to the deadly cancer, mesothelioma, which can take several decades to develop from the time of exposure to asbestos.

Australia has also seen a rise in the number of people seeking treatment for mesothelioma, as an increasing number of cases come to light, according to reports. Some hospitals in Victoria have seen numbers double over the past couple of years.
