Dyan Eybergen has just published her first book Out Of The Mouths Of Babes. This is a parenting resource book, but it is completely different from most books in this genre. Yes, Dyan is a medical professional, a registered pediatric psychiatric nurse to be exact, but this book is written from the parents perspective rather than the health expert.

In fact much of the information contained in the book come from the authors personal experiences with bringing up her three children. At 120 pages Out Of The Mouths Of Babes is hardly an exhausting read, yet withing this relatively slim book is an absolute wealth of information.

By keeping short on theory and long on practical examples there were two things that hit me about the whole subject of parenting. Firstly there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution, different children have very different needs. And Secondly for the most part applying a good dose of common sense to any given situation will reveal the answer that you are looking for.

I managed to catch up with Dyan to ask her about this new book. We talked for about 40 minutes and covered an enormous amount of ground. We explored several of the potential battlefields that a parent often faces. The thorny issue of discipline, what is right and what is wrong? There are many different views, Dyan has some great ideas that I really think would benefit many parents.

Another common war zone is food. How to deal with the picky eater, while young Johnny might think it is fine to exist solely on Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches, that diet is going to wear a bit thin with the rest of the family. Fear not, there are some strategies that can be used to work around the food zone.

Although subjects not covered in the book we also talked about dealing with divorce, an occurrence that is all too frequent in today’s society. Another issue that parents some times have to deal with is the loss of a loved one, once again Dyan has some solid advice.

Out Of The Mouths Of Babes is available from Amazon, and Dyan Eyberger also has a very useful web site. The entire interview was recorded and you can listen to it here.
