I agree that we should give respect to all religions. It is not about legality it is about decency. I have written a book about the LDS, but did not describe the LDS endowment because I thought it would be unethical. Likewise, I would not describe Hopi sacred ceremonies, and do not make fun of Muslim beliefs. And I DO get upset when I see television show the practices of the Vodoun religion based on prejudice. But I, as an anthropologist and social worker have ethical principles I adhere to.

The problem is that liberals, like conservatives think that they are unbiased. Like Tom Hanks who defends gays, but then attacks a religion as unAmerican. He's just as dumb as conservatives who call liberals communists.

Thank you for your post. I also felt no point in boycotting for that is what the media wants us to do.

A main reason not to protest is because people will misunderstand or distort our reasons. They say because we feel guilty about polygamy etc. Actually it is sadness that nothing is sacred anymore.

I respect all religions. I visited a Hindu temple and unlike most tourists respectfully took off my shoes and refused to take pictures. I will not watch videos of what secretly goes on in Mecca, and will quietly decline to pray to Buddha without causing any disturbances.

It is sad that nothing is sacred anymore: Women give birth on TV, people talk about sex openly, family issues are public, women wear clothing that hide nothing.

By the way, they are making a movie making fun of the Old Testament as well. All religions are under assault.

This author is interesting. All I can say is, I have a life to live. . . I can't get offended and pick fights for every offensive things done to every other religion even if I disagree with it. If I'm a loose cannon getting offended all of the time (which I would be if I got mad about every time a religion were mocked), my credibility would decrease and I would be ingnored at a time when my voice would be most needed (when the issue more closely affects me). You've got to pick your battles. This issue does hit many Mormons close to home. Many people (not just Mormons) are offended when sex is put up on the big screen because they consider it sacred. That's what the temple ceremonies are for Mormons - not so much secret as they are sacred. We are aware that lots of people know about the ceremonies. We don't talk about them because we hold them dear and consider them sacred. This is kin to how I don't talk about my sex life with strangers. . . I just don't do it. It's not really any of their business frankly (not to sound insensitive).

Why pick on the Mormons?

Because they are upright moral people and their very ingrained ethics are a silent accusation against those who want to rid the world of the idea of sin and guilt.

If it was really about polygamy, why not pick on the "polygamous Native American" family that I treated when I was in the IHS? Or the "polygamous Islamic family" ?

There are real economic reasons for polygamy in primative society: It which protects women who must be married to exist, and allows them to live a full life when not enough men are available.

If a woman is sick or infertile, he can marry another woman without divorcing her which would mean she would live in poverty and disgrace. It also allows relief from childbearing: Many Native American tribes and African tribes forbid intercourse when a woman is pregnant or breast feeding.

But the US version stresses sex :big love, not family life. And of course the picture is that men are the ones getting all that nice sex.

How do women feel about it? Not too well... read your bible: the stories of Abraham Isaac and Jacob ring true for every polygamous society: with loving sisters becoming bitter rivals, with jealous children trying to kill the child of the more loved wife, and with wives running away because the senior wife mistreats her.

But the reason the press wants to tout "big love" has nothing to do with showing it as a way that societies encourage human ties.

They see it as a way to weaken marriage, not as a way to strengthen marriage, as it actually does in other religious traditions.
