Satsuma Florida- Just on the heels of Caylee Anthony’s memorial service, we have a shout to the nation of another missing child out of Florida. Haleigh Cummings snatched from her fathers trailer during the early morning hours of February 10th. Seems the only adult in the home has no real recollection of went on that night and has been questioned numerous times regarding Haleigh and her disappearance. Countless children have come up missing in the days since Haleigh’s disappearance. Millions of children have been missing before Haleigh’s disappearance To many to count on my fingers and toes.
How come they don’t get the media coverage like Haleigh and Caylee. Why arent they blasted and paraded all over the media outlets? I for one would like to know. I, like everyone else in the world, would like to see Haleigh brought home. I would like to see them all brought home. Each one featured on the television and internet. Each one given the same respect that children like Haleigh and Caylee are getting.
There are 800,000 missing children each year under the age of 18. That makes around 2,000 children reported missing each day in America. That’s just in America. Is any child better than the other? Do one or two deserve more coverage than any of the other missing children? Over 60,000 children in Canada will be reported missing this year. That’s one child every 9 minutes. I can only imagine the number of missing children there are each day internationally.
I have been asked by the editors at BNN to cover the Haleigh Cummings case and I obliged. I would like to see coverage for all the missing children not only in America but around the world. I realize that 2,000 children reported missing a day is alot to have to cover each and everyday. Why dont they get the same respect as Haleigh and Caylee? I don’t know I think the laws need to change regarding one missing child and another. Whether the child was abducted by family, acquaintance, or stranger. They all deserve the same coverage. Haleigh Cummings has disappeared with no clues the detectives told her biological grandmother. Nothing. Millions of children disappear each and every day leaving no clues. We never get to hear about them, well not until you open your mailbox and the little flier with 2 children’s faces on it included in your mail. Or at the local supermarket the big poster of missing/lost children. No announcements on the internet or the television. Nothing. Why? How is Caylee or Haleigh any more important then any of the rest?
More people need to be involved in making a change regarding missing/lost children and the media attention and coverage that they get. A great number of these children are never found. Why is that? Is it because its not local for everyone to know about a missing child? I live on the West Coast and I get to hear about children like Caylee and Haleigh every day. Elizabeth Smart was all over for days and days until she was spotted disguised by her abductor. Cole Puffingburger abducted by Mexican drug nationals for 21 million dollars that his grandfather owed. He got national attention. Why not the rest of the missing, abducted, lost children. It may be to great of a task for our nation to handle. It’s only fair to give them all the same respect and coverage that any other missing child receives.

Bev, I’m wondering the same thing. Saw a program on scent trail dogs years ago that were so good, they could tail someone in a car. They tracked scent on a highway. Walking a while, then the guys would load them up in the car, drive them to the next exit, let them out to see if the car turned off the interstate. If they could find one of these air scent super trackers, they could take them to every home of the door of the 44 abusers in the 5 mile area, knock on the door, have the dogs check the guys for any scent of this little girl. Maybe those special dogs are too busy sniffing out drugs, we need more kid sniffing dogs. Sick of all these sickos hurtin kids. Did they ever find out where the train that passed by about the time Haleigh disappeared went to?

Well, there are a few reasons that these two got such media coverage and it really does not have anything to do with anyone not caring about the others. Caylee Anthony disappeared under extraordinary circumstances. I mean when is the last time you have ever heard of a child being gone and the mother having to be forced to report it after 31 days? The circumstances alone made it newsworthy just because the whole thing was so odd. Haleigh Cummings is being reported because do you know the odds of a complete stranger taking a child out of her bed in her own home? Especially with an adult and another child in the same room and left not only unharmed but untouched. Once again extraordinary circumstances. Sadly, Haleigh Cummings is already fading as there are only 10 articles for today, one is your blog. (through Google news)
We must also remember that the media would not have put all of the attention on the Caylee Anthony case if there had not been public interest. Without the public interest, the media spotlight would have died out long ago. So you must realize that its not ALL the media. A large part of it is the public.
It is also important to note that 95 percent of those missing children are children who are involved in some sort of family squabble or custody dispute and a noncustodial parent or other family member takes them. This type of thing is not going to garner the attention- not fair but the way it is.
What you should be more focused on finding out is why the public gets overly curious about some of these cases and do not even ask questions about the others. The media only reports to the extent of how they can get viewers and that is through public viewers.
Your post, regarding stats, is misleading. something to keep in mind - from missingkids.com. (Note the large difference between 800,000 and 115, which is the number related to “typical” kidnappings like Haleigh’s, which is what you some may think you were referring to in your post)

* 203,900 children were the victims of family abductions.
* 58,200 children were the victims of non-family abductions.

The dogs should have been brought in immediately; valuable time was lost right after Haleigh went missing and those scent clue are gone forever. Something is highly suspect about the girlfriend and her waiting until Haleigh’s dad came home from work. The cases that need the most coverage are the ones like this–frightening abductions that don’t involve custodial issues. I have no doubt, unfortunately, that this girl is already dead.
We must be on the same wave length because just last night, I was telling my husband that I’d like to call into NG and ask whatever happened to her coverage of another missing Florida child - little Adje. NG started out like a bat out of hell on her coverage and then Haleigh went missing and Adje was forgotten. Adje is a sick child too, with a mental capacity of about half his age. He was abducted from his grandmother’s homefront. So what are the obvious differences between Adje and Haleigh? Well, the following come to mind immediately: a boy not a girl, dark skinned not light, and Adje is probably not American born.
There are 394 cases of Family Abductions listed nationwide at the NCMEC of which 27 are in Florida.

So basically you want no coverage at all? Hear no evil, see no evil, speak of no evil? If 2000, or 200, or even 20 missing children were reported by the media daily, the public as a whole would very quickly tune out the noise… which is what it would be at that point. The children would get no ‘respect’ and very, very little attention and air time. The public’s attention span is not going to stretch, and neither is the public’s sympathy. 99.9% of missing child cases are either a local issue requiring no national coverage at all, or are teenagers missing by their own choice.

Its obvious that the Cummings family as well as the rest of familys in this part of Florida are middle to lower class. This does not give you or anyone else the right to refer to them as being stoned or inbred! I am middle class myself but the area of Tx. I live in is about 15-20 yrs ahead of the area where the Cummings live in that aspect. The issue is Haleigh and not what class she or her family is. Grant it examining the background of the family is applicable for the investigation however passing judgement is only for God. There are millions of these cold case files transpiring every day, and they do not get this much attention but maybe we as Americans can change that by focusing the same way in every case as the two cases in FL.
As for the Caylee Anthony case.
The logical explanation as to why the case is bizzar and the whole family has acted so bizzar I believe is a case of incest. The father of Caylee is none other than Lee Caceys brother. This is the reason noone seems to know who the father is; because Cindi and George do not want anyone to know. Have you seen Lees deposistion? He absolutly would not even comment when the lawer for Z.Gonzles asked him who the father was. With that in mind I think thats why it was easy for Casey to take her daughters life, she looked at her life as illegitimate any way.
There is no way the press and media can cover 2000 children a day — but local papers and media outlets can cover the children missing in their areas — and they do. Many times a national outlet picks up a story due to it being a slow day in “news” and then they ride with the story. It’s not a racial matter; it’s not a political matter; it’s only the news of the day and then they stick with it.
I find it fascinating that the last two missing children covered nationally are from Florida and both are from dysfunctional families.
I am going to say something very controversial……..every new born baby gets a GPS implant. I know, everyone thinks it is a sign of the end of the world. How about tracking OUR CHILDREN!

A decision has not yet been made, but she still could face the death penalty. The decision won’t be made until all the evidence is back and it isn’t yet.

The State Attorney’s decision not to seek the death penalty against Casey Anthony in her daughter Caylee’s murder was made the week before Caylee’s remains were found near her house with the duct tape still stretched across her mouth and with a heart sticker that had apparently been stuck over the duct tape.
Now that Caylee’s been found, everything is different.
“We do not know what all the evidence is and what the evidence absolutely means. There’s a mountain of forensic evidence that has not been disclosed yet,” WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said.
On the surface, many of Florida’s death penalty legal arguments could apply. The murder could be cruel and atrocious, cold, calculated and premeditated. It may have happened while Caylee was being abused. Also, Caylee is younger than 12 and she was particularly vulnerable because she was allegedly murdered by a person she trusted.
But Sheaffer, who is a former prosecutor, says this is a circumstantial case, so the evidence linking Casey to Caylee’s murder must be very strong for the State Attorney to seek death even if the legal arguments for the death penalty, called aggravators, outweigh the arguments against it, called mitigators.
Sheaffer says prosecutors always consult with the State Attorney General’s Office before seeking a death sentence, because the Attorney General has to defend it before the Florida Supreme Court.
“It’s a much harsher standard that the court applies in looking at the evidence as to whether the death penalty should be upheld,” Sheaffer said.
There is no deadline for prosecutors to decide. What usually happens is, once they make the decision, they inform the defense right away so they can begin to prepare.

On Monday, Jose Baez convinced a judge not to release the video until he sees it. The tape shows Casey in jail as she was told that her daughter’s remains had been found.
Baez picked up a copy and is now reviewing the tape. He has two weeks to ask a judge to seal it.

Everything revolves around his grand jury testimony and he has to be honest like he was there! I don’t understand why there is no coverage on Haleigh Cummings any more. She has still not been found, are they even still looking for her. What leads do they have. I hate it when they get you involved in a situation and then leave you hanging.
