All writers dream of the day when they become published for the first time. Sometimes that wait takes forever, but for inspirational author Sheri Kaye Hoff, her decision to self-publish came naturally. She simply didn’t want to wait and decided self-publishing was the way to go.
Sheri resides in Parker, Colorado with her husband and three children. She is a Life Coach and owner of the Sheri K. Hoff International Coaching Company. She teaches college classes as an adjunct faculty member and has earned her Master of Arts in Organizational Management. Her new book, Keys to Living Joyfully, offers a way of living a meaningful, successful and joy filled life.
Sheri chose to self-publish with Createspace.com and we interviewed her to find out more about her experience.
Thank you for this interview, Sheri. Why did you decide to self-publish?
This is my first published book. I thought, at first, that I would try to sign with a publisher, but then I felt that I needed to get my book out to my audience right away. I did a lot of research on self-publishing and looked at several options. Createspace.com offered the services I wanted.
How is Createspace to work with?
Createspace is very easy to work with provided you already have your cover completed and your book formatted. I hired a graphic designer to create my book cover, and I formatted the interior myself. The way that Createspace works is that an author uploads everything and orders books to sell or give away. Interested readers are then able to order their copies through Amazon or Createspace.com. The quality of the books are very high and I carry very little inventory.
But why the urgency? Why didn’t you go the traditional route?
In today’s world, if you have a dream to become published, you have a great opportunity to self-publish. I chose to self-publish because I wanted my book on the market fast. I wanted my life-coaching clients to be able to purchase and use it immediately. I also felt that my message needed to be heard.
What advice can you give to others who might decide to go the self-publishing route?
The bottom line is that your writing needs to be great and on target for the people that you want to reach. If you have that, you can make it happen, whether you self-publish or land a contract. I would also add that it is important to mastermind with a few great people. I did that with Michele Caron (she wrote the foreword for the book), a couple of close mentors (business and personal), and my graphic designer. When everyone agreed that the book was a high quality creation, I knew that I had something great to offer the public.
Thank you so much for this interview, Sheri. Would you like to tell everyone where they can find out more about your and your book?

Excellent interview ladies. I’m seriously considering the self-publishing route too. It doesn’t sound like you have any regrets about doing it, Sheri, but is there even a tiny sense of disappointment knowing a NY publishing house isn’t listed inside the cover?
Thanks. I wish you the best of luck.

Hi Cheryl, I wish you great luck and best wishes with your project. Great question, I don’t feel dissappointed at all, but maybe it is because I never submitted it to a NY publishing house. I think I felt a burning desire to get my message out and this eclipsed concerns about not having a big name publisher.
Thank you for your good wishes for me and my book. You will have to let me know when you publish. Feel free to email me at coachsheri@lifeisjoyful.org if you have any more questions.

Good luck on your new book. Publishing a book is one of the greatest accomplishments in life. After my first book was published, I was so excited that I couldn’t even sleep. May you appreciate the joy that comes with being a published author. God bless!
