In a mea cupla worthy of Florida voting ballot designers, 300,000 Georgia voters received letter informing them about acceptable forms of identification. The letter, from the State Election Board, identified the recipients as registered voters who might not have an state driver’s license. The voters were requested to let the clerks at their county election office know that they, the voters, had another, valid, form of ID. According to the letter, voters in Georgia can use any of five other photo IDs for voting.

Except the letter is wrong.

A court ruling prevents the state from requiring any specific photo ID for voting. Under current Georgia law, there are 17 forms of ID acceptable for voting, or, the voter can sign an affidavit stating they really are who they claim to be.

The letter was mailed before a Fulton County Superior Court Judge shot-down the law that would have limited the types of ID required for voting.
