A Worcester County grand jury has indicted Mayo Group Development LLC, accusing the real estate firm of the improper removal of the potentially deadly substance, asbestos. According to prosecutors the company did not file notices to state that it had removed asbestos from a ten storey building in downtown Worcester.
Prosecutors have said that because of this failing by the company it violated the Clean Air Act, and the company was charged with two counts for the for failure to file notices of asbestos removal with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
In addition to this the Mayo Group was also charged with counts of failing to follow procedures relating to asbestos emission control and failing to dispose of asbestos waste properly. The indictments came following an investigation that was carried out by the Massachusetts Environmental Crimes Strike Force (ECSF).
The indictment took place at the end of last week, and the Mayo Group is set to be called to Worcester Superior Court at a later date that is yet to be announced.
