I have an earlier DVD version I bought about 8 years ago. The video and sound quality is much higher in this one, but they've edited from takes in which everyone speaks their lines quickly. I guess the original production team was concerned about the length of the series so did a sped-up version that is seen in this release.

The Honourable Schoolboy fits between Tinker, tailor and Smiley's People. Alas it did not generate nearly the interest that the other two books did.

One can speculate, Tinker and Smiley's People both have George Smiley at the forefront. The Honorable Schoolboy has Smiley as an aside. The 'hero' being jerry Westerby. The book was fine, but was slightly out of character.

As to Dud's well I point to 'The Naive and sentimental lover', this was a horrible book. Most Le Carre fans went 'Huh, where did that come from'?

However, that awful book aside, Le Carre is the best, and I do mean the best Novelist of our time.

I have come to the realization that Le Carre will never dip back into the Smiley world, but it certainly was a magical time in the literary world.

Le Carre has no duds at all in his huge output. My favourite is The Honourable Schoolboy - a must read. Le Carre is a consumate novelist - in the top ten of the late 20th Century. He doesn't win the smerter literary prizes - but he writes far better than many who do...
