There is speculation about Michael Steele and how he may fit into the political scene in the future. Steele, the African American LT. Governor of MD, is just coming off a narrow loss in the MD Senate race. There are reports that he may be offered either the post of Chairman of the RNC to replace Ken Mehlman or a position in the Bush Cabinet.

Fair or not, the party of Lincoln has had a hard time attracting African American voters since the early 50’s. Steele’s promotion to a highly visible position within the party would be a good way for the GOP to regain the much needed African American support.

Lt. Governor Steele’s credentials are formidable with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University and a law degree from Georgetown University. He is the first African American elected to statewide office in Maryland and is the USA’s top African American Republican elected official.

After the GOP “thumping” in the election, as George Bush said, Michael Steele may be the bright star that will help Republicans hold the presidency and regain power in Congress.
