Catholics Need a Modern Thomas Aquinas
The Catholic Church was once a progressive force in Western culture when under the influence of the best minds of an era it blended traditional theology with the latest insights into man and his world. St. Thomas in his day incorporated the speculations of a leading secular mind, Aristotle, to bring the church into the future:

Neither Aristotle nor Aquinas had it all right, but the blind dogmatists were held in check.
Sadly the Roman Catholic Church since Vatican II was aborted have been suppressing the best mind of their church such as Hans Küng:

Theologians who skirt the party line are ousted from Catholic colleges. Most Catholics either depart this church or its doctrines.
How sad to see such a proud tradition trampled by its self-appointed authoritarian leaders.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackCatholic have had a “modern” Thomas Acquinas. His name is John Paul II…have you ever read him?
As for the latest bioethics output, I agree with them. Manipulating (and killing) embryos is questionable ethically, because you are making man into your own image, in this the image of the scientist….Ubermensch, anyone?
I am not alone in this: It is an ongoing theme in thoughtful science fiction, from Frankenstein to Cordwainer Smith to Heinlein…none of whom are Catholic, and of whom only Smith could be called a Christian.
Most of the “theologians” you refer to can easily find a home in the Episcopalian church.
They are western oriented progressives, whose works have little to do with the daily lives of most Christians (who are not westerners) and less to do with helping the poor.
Even “liberation theology” resulted in FARC and Castro; but in most countries, the “Fruit” of liberation theology is a lot of dead locals and a massive conversion of locals to Pentecostal forms of Protestantism.
As for Kung, I’ve read his works…his problem is that he just isn’t a believer in God, just in theology…pop theology. I would prefer the works of an honest agnostic to that type of claptrap.
Mr. Kent,
We submit that St. Thomas Aquinas would have regarded Mr. Kung, liberation theology, and yes Vatican II itself as symptoms of the disease that is killing the Church; “the Smoke of Satan” Pope Paul VI was referring to if we’re not mistaken.
Cheers,
Charlie
