Diane Downs, The Murder Mom from “Small Sacrifices” Fame
Is Up for Parole 25 Years After Shooing Her Three Children
One Child Dead, One Wheelchair-Bound for Life
Mother Claimed She Was Victim of a Drug Hit
Diane Downs, the subject of true crime author Ann Rule’s book, Small Sacrifices is up for parole on December 9 in the state of Oregon.
The horrific crimes against Diane Downs’ children, and the person who committed them, gained the attention of the national press after Downs showed up at McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield, Oregon, on the evening of May 19, 1983. Inside Downs’ car, hospital personnel found an unbelievable scene: tucked in Downs’ blood spattered Nissan, all three of her children in critical condition from gunshot wounds, while an “ashen” faced Downs kept repeating the same phrase: “somebody just shot my kids”.
The Bushy Hair Stranger
Downs, who had suffered a gunshot wound to her forearm, told authorities that while on a drive home from visiting friends, Downs, with her children in the car, had encountered a “bushy haired stranger” on a dark road. Downs claimed the man waved her car over. Thinking he needed help, Downs said she stopped and then got out of her car to talk to him. It was then, according to Downs, that the man, whom Diane described as a “busy haired stranger”, demanded her car. When she refused, the man pulled a gun from under his jacket then leaned in and began shooting her kids: eight-year-old Christie, seven-year-old Cheryl, and three-year-old Danny.
Since Downs’ injuries were non-life threatening and her children were being cared for by the emergency room staff, the Lane County Sheriff’s office asked Downs to accompany them back to the scene of the crime. An all-points bulletin was issued for the “bushy haired stranger”. Diane led them to Old Mohawk Road next to the McKenzie river.
It was Diane Downs’ behavior that first alerted the hospital staff and authorities that perhaps Downs wasn’t telling the truth. When she returned to the hospital and was given the news that the medical staff had been unable to save 7-year-old Cheryl, hospital personnel found her “too accepting” and stoic, instead of “hysterical”. When told that her 3-year-old son Danny had a chance to survive, Downs responded with “Do you mean the bullet missed his heart? Gee whiz!”.
Detectives questioned Downs at the hospital. They had learned, prior to the conversation with Downs, that the weapon used was most likely a .22 caliber pistol. They also learned that powder burns from the weapon were found on the children. This meant that whoever pulled the trigger had done so in very close proximity. At a later date, forensic investigation found blood splay patterns that indicated the weapon had been fired from the left, or driver’s side. When detectives asked Downs if she owned any guns, she told them she owned a .38 caliber pistol and a .22 caliber rifle.
Detectives also learned that Downs was 27-year-old postal worker who had recently relocated to Oregon from Arizona after a divorce. The move brought Downs and her kids close to where her parents lived while she worked for the post office at the Cottage Grove district. Diane’s father had also been a postal worker.
Downs told the detectives that when she saw the “bushy haired stranger” in the middle of the road, she thought he might need help. She purportedly stopped her car and then got out. It was then, Downs claimed, that the man pulled a gun from under his denim jacket and demanded her car keys. When she refused, she claimed the man leaned down and began firing into the car at her children through the driver’s side window. When he reached for her keys, Downs claimed she fought back. She then managed to get into her car where the man allegedly fired yet another shot, wounding Diane’s forearm. Diane told the detectives that she then “stepped on the gas” and “raced” to the hospital, leaving the man behind.
But at the hospital, Downs exhibited, what the staff said was an “icy” demeanor and other strange behaviors for a distraught mother whose children had just been shot.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackbackthis woman doesnt deserve to be paroled after what she did to her children, her daughter is gone and son wont walk and the other one suffered such trama seing your own mother kill and would her brother and sister and her, why should she get out and live a normal life now when her children have been thru so much, i hope they keep her in till she dies, she should have gotten death for her actions!
I am from ORegon and I for one pray to God they dont release that woman..she is insane in the membrane…I mean..did the police ever investigate if she shot herself in the arm to make it appear more believable???
Nobody deserves to rot in prison more than this monster does. I hope she never breathes a free breath of air as long as she lives.
Pickles - the fictitious character in this case, “bushy haired stranger” blamed by the murderer; the “too accepting” behavior; the “icy” demeanor - Almost identical to the descript of another one making more recent headlines. Creepy!
i partied with this nut back in hs…….she was a nut bag ho back then too!
I think those kids went through hell - the surviving daughter had a lot of balls to testify like she did - especially against a court room full of country folk people.
Its amazing that I dont live in the usa but that case just blew me away - I was reading the small sacrifices by anne rule - and the book touched me quite alot.
In my country she woudl have been released after 20 years - because the justice system is so flimsy in my country - but at least there is one good thing - if the courts dont punish people the inmates do. Gregory Foote was right in what he said “the court hopes that she will never be free again” “I am sure if oregon had the death sentence she would have been executed.
Dianne Downes doesn’t deserve to live for what she did to those children ever!. If Oregon permitted it I am sure she would have been strapped into a chair and been given death by lethal injection.
Good on the surviving child Christie for testifying - it took guts for her to do that
could i really and i mean reall watch jamelia;jada and dylan and pull a trigger i cant see that i cant its impossible it really is
i think those kids went through hell and i honestly think that Dianne Downs shouldn’t even have the nerve to ask for parole… she crazy to do something like that to her own kids.
Personally i think she should’ve got the death penalty…
i think that Dianne Downs is crazy to even ask for parole. its crazy what she put those children through, i mean i watched that movie “Small Sacrifices” and i pratically cryed. i feel sorry for the kids. i mean who would want to go on with their life knowing that their mother paralysed them or enabled them to talk…. i hate it.
Personally i think she should’ve got the death penalty…
Diane Downs is the epitome of evil, and should have been put to death for her heinous crime! I seriously doubt she’ll ever be released from prison.
Interesting. I just 20 minutes ago got thru watching Farrah in her role as Diane Downs in the movie “Small Sacrifices”. I did a search on the web and whamo…she was up for a parole hearing. And this article is still going with the bushy haired dude bullshit. Clearly Diane Downs has not changed much in 25 years. I can see why they used Farrah to play the part of Downs.
By the way, if anyone out there thinks Farrah Fawcett was just another brain dead no talent actress and you haven’t seen the movie…you must see how good of an actress she was.
I used to watch this movie that my mother recorded from TV about 20 years ago then found out about the book then was wondering what ever happened to my VHS to show it to a friend. No video stores had it, but found it at a library.
We watched it just now and I searched the web to find out an update. And I can’t believe she would even be up for parole. Did they ever find the gun? Obviously in her mind she didn’t do it…man thats scary to even think to have her out of prison after what she did to her children for the love of a Man who didnt want to be a father. She should stay in Prison.
I agree that Farah Fawcitt did a great job and she also died on my bday June 25th.
I WATCHED 20/20 TONIGHT AND I FELT SO BAD FOR HER CHILDREN. HOW A MOM COULD MURDER HER CHILDREN AND AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED AND STILL TRY TO SOCIETY TO BELIEVE THAT SHE IS INNOCENT. WE SHOULD NOT BE WASTING TAX PAYER MONEY TO ALLOW HER THE PRIVLEDGE TO LIVE. SHE SHOULD BE PUT TO DEATH. SHE HAD NO CONSIDERATION FOR HER CHILDREN SO WHY SHOULD WE HAVE CONSIDERATION OF HER.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW CHRISTI AND DANNY ARE DOING? I HAVE BEEN SURFING THE INTERNET TO SEE HOW THE POOR KIDS HAVE FAIRED OUT IN LIVE AS YOUNG ADULTS.
sandy i read the book and saw the movie and it was UNBELEIVABLE..BTW to everyone who saw either the movie or the book the testimony bewttenn the daughter and prosecutor is word to word court documented on the trial when her daughter testified..again sandy answer to your question..i found this out.. the son went on from HS and got a college degree and he is doing fine..the daughter actually got married and in now a mom herself to a little girl..neither kids EVER looked for Diane or made contact with her..hope this helps
I WATCHED 20/20 AND I THINK WHAT SHE DID WAS HORRIFIC AND I HOPE THAT SHE ROTS IN JAIL AND THAT ALL HER CHILDREN CAN MOVE ON WITH THERE LIVES KNOWING THAT THEY ARE NOTHING LIKE THERE MOTHER! AND HOPE TO SEE ALL THE KIDS GET TOGETHER SOME DAY!
I am an avid Ann Rule fan and this was the first book of hers that I ever read. I could not then nor can I now understand a mother like Diane Downs. I saw an Oprah show several years ago (between 15-20 years ago) that had Diane from prison and Ann Rule in person with Oprah on it. Diane was arrogant and non-apologetic then and I imagine she still is. Everyone is right - she should have been put to death for what she did. Hopefully the other inmates at the prison will make her wish she were dead! I applaud Christie and Danny for their courage and their ability to live a long and productive life. I am so sorry that their birth mother is who she is and I hope they don’t think that they have to be anything like her. Good luck to all involved!
im from stourbridge a place in england. that women is sick end of!! ive got four children and i love them too pieces!! there the most important thing in my life. only a monster could do wot she did. so that tells me she should rot in that prison.we dont want people like that walking our streets.lets stick the bitch in a big room with a load of mothers thats fair.she took a life she does life end of!!!!!!!
I’m not a big fan of the death penalty but in this, I’m for it 100%. The woman has no true remorse for what she did to her own children and would have no problem killing again if someone stood between her and what she wants. People like her are sick and can not be rehabilitated/fixed. The only thing this woman has learned from her experience is how to do it better next time. Why waste tax payers money by keeping her locked up till she dies, just get rid of her before she has a chance to do this again.
I can’t understand how this evil woman could point a gun at her own little ones then pull the trigger. Narcissistic psychopath. Actually all psychopaths have elements of narcissism but this woman takes the cake. She viewed her kids as her property, saw them as a nuisance, and didn’t think anything of getting rid of them. Psychopaths have a distorted view of consequences. They think they will get away with their crimes and that others are too gullible to figure their actions out.
I remember when she escaped. She started writing to an innmate’s husband, then made a date to meet up with him. She claimed she escaped to find the “killer” but when police caught up with her, this man and Diane emerged from a bedroom. The man had only shorts on and she had only a shirt on. These poor children.
i personally think that the mom is crazy. how could you harm three little children that are yours. in the movie she acted as if it didnt phase her and she still will not admitt to what she did. it makes me sick to my stomach to see her face and she had the nerve to have another baby and put her through hell and sent her threats. she deserves to suffer until judgement day.
Is it true that Diane Downs was a surrogate mother for a family in Louisville KY?
I HAVE WATCHED THE FILM ABOUT 20 TIMES OR MORE AND HAVE IT ON DVD…. TONIGHT WAS THE FIRST TIME I ACTUALLY READ UP ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET AND SAW THE REAL DIANE DOWNS FACE AND READ THE REAL STORY. THE HAS ALWAY’S UPSET ME BUT I WATCHED IT BECAUSE I FANCIED THE PROSECUTOR N LIKED FARRAH…. BUT, KNOWING ITS A TRUE STORY (ON TRUE MOVIES HRE IN ENGLAND) AND SEEING THE REAL BITCH HAS SICKENED ME……………… THEY SHOULD HAVE GIVEN THE DEATH PENALTY TO THE INSANE EVIL COW…. GOD BLESS THE CHILDREN AND IN MEMORY OF SHARNA XXX
Thoughts from Manchester, England, Diane, I really, really hope you are never free. One thing your Country does better than ours is make the guilty suffer. In England you would have walked by now…… shame on us.God bless your children- they were so meant to be here with us!!!!!
I have watched this movie many times. I finally found it on DVD, and got it in today. I love Farrah Fawcett, and I think she did a good job on the part. Diane Downs is a sick, psychotic sociopath. When she found out the news of her son, she said, “Oh, the bullet missed his heart? Gee whiz”. Who in the h*** says that about their own child? I also watched a video of her saying how her arm hurt and she couldn’t tie her shoes for months. Not one mention about her children. I wish she was given the death penalty. The child she had at the end of the movie, she named Amy..I have found on Facebook. She was adopted by a wonderful family, and she has a son. She is a beautiful and wonderful mother. Diane has threatened her. I am glad these children have a good life, and not with this monster. Diane will have to face God one day. When she does, we all know where she is going. Diane, may you burn in HELL.
