I played basketball in elementary school and was abysmal.  Over three years, our team ended up having the second best record, only one loss behind Downsville, most of whose players I ended up hating for a long time simply for that reason.  My coach was good and I really liked him as a coach and a person.  He would give us the normal talks about going out and doing our best and whom to cover and where.  Yet we weren’t ever told about ways to improve our lives and become better people and achieve our dreams.  We were all white male elementary religious school students in a small Wisconsin town.  What was there that could have held us back?  Now a movie about a coach who does try to help his students be their best is available in a brand new format.

Starting this December 16th, now available on Blu-ray Disc for the first time ever from Paramount Studios Home Entertainment and MTV Home Entertainment comes the true story of a high school basketball coach and his attempt to better the lives of his players above all else.  Coach Carter – Blu-ray Disc is ready to drill it’s way into your living room and shoot right into your heart.  Bring home this fantastic and inspiring film for your favorite basketball fan today!

In this film inspired by a true story, Samuel L. Jackson is Ken Carter, a high school basketball coach who cares more about the characters and dreams of his players then their scores.  That’s not to say the team wasn’t good, because they were fantastic.  Yet in the midst of an undefeated season, the players’ grades became unacceptable to Coach Carter.  So he locked the gym, gaining national attention and wrath, and forced his students to go to tutors to bring up their grades before they could practice or play any games.  Carter wants his players to have a future and he sees their grades as the ticket out.  But will his team be able to get their grades up and still win their division?  This film also stars music icon Ashanti in a heartbreaking role.

The special features included in this Blu-ray Disc version of the film include the original theatrical trailer in high definition, a look at casting this film and achieving realistic basketball scenes, a featurette about the writing of the movie, six deleted scenes, a look at the real Coach Carter, a music video from Twista and a whole lot more.

I liked this movie when I saw it in theaters and it is so much better on Blu-ray.  Samuel L. Jackson is a complete treasure to watch on the television screen.  This is probably his best and most sincere role since he was in Pulp Fiction.  This is also his his most sincere and heartwarming role, mainly since it doesn’t have to do with snakes or screaming the m-f word at the top of his lungs.  It seems as though America has been drowning in a dearth of inspirational sports movies.  We’ve seen debate teams, mathletes, swim teams, football, basketball, baseball, hockey, surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding and certain other fringe sports I’m sure I have forgotten.  Other than Friday Night Lights, which will forever be the greatest of the genre, this film is one of the greatest to come out in a long time.  I wholly recommend this film as being one of the best in the genre.

Let this Coach bring you important life lessons.
