My wife and I (we've been together for 63 years) heard Gigli in Birmingham, England, Town Hall on 11 November 1946. An unforgetable experience. His rendering of "Una Furtiva Lagrima" and "Amaryllis" will always stay in my mind.

Apparently the callous person you refer to lacks artistic sensitivity and the understanding to accept new work. My suggestion is that he wasn't even worth mentioning, but it did provide a framework for your essay. Wilson and his work have given me (among millions of others) both smiles and happy tears of joy.

Beniamino Gigli. How well I loved him only at the age of 20 in 1969. I can still hear him sing Amaryllis. Although my recording scratched and the sound from the stereo was mono, even a bit screechingly thin, he filled me up, inspired me to the glorious if also ruinous passions that were the earmarks of my youth.

Thank you for mentioning him. To attend his last concert in 1955 would have been enough for me as well.
