Blogging from Phoenix — In the week since police charged an eight year old St. Johns boy with premeditated murder in the killing of his father and a boarder. Authorities are still baffled over why or what would cause a child to commit so shocking a crime. But in a State where they put children on chain gangs, it comes as little surprise. Local Phoenix talk radio stations are encouraging folks to buy the rope before we pick a jury.
But among a minority of people who actually think before casting stones. We are left wondering what could possibly have happened in the life of this child, growing up in a sparse desert hamlet some 200 miles east of Metropolitan Phoenix. What would cause him as the police describe it, To methodically murder his Father and another man. In a police interview the boy said he had been spanked the night before for some trouble in school, but did not say that was why he did it.
Prior to a media gag order, the police chief and prosecutor said on the record, there was no evidence of any long term problem at school or in the home. The boy used a single action .22 Rifle, which would have required him to chamber a round each time he fired and he reportedly shot each man four times.
The child’s mother 26 year old Erin Bloomfield, shared custody of her son with the boys Father, 29 year old Vincent Romero, the couple divorced six years ago. She is said to have spoken by telephone with her son each week and visited most every month, driving 20 hours from Mississippi to do so. Mrs. Bloomfield had just returned from her most recent visit when she was called about the murders. The boys Mother reportedly told authorities her son seemed to have been changing recently. She pointed to Tiffany Romero, the boys step mother, as the possible source of the change in her sons attitude. She claimed to worry her son might have been abused, but was unable to provide any direct proof or incident to support her suspicions.
Apache County Superior court Judge Michael Roca has barred anyone connected with the case from talking to the media, But prior to the gag order St Johns Police Chief Roy Melnick stated there was no evidence of abuse at home or school. It was also revealed the boys father had taught his son to shoot and had taken him hunting, occasionally joined by 39 year old Timothy Romans the other man who was killed, Romans had rented a room in the family home and worked in construction with Mr Romero. A majority of the four thousand or so inhabitants of the mostly catholic community of St Johns either knew the victims personally or know someone who did, and unlike a large city the grief is intimate and shared. Those who have been willing to speak publicly, have said the eight year old who stands accused of cold blooded murder was a typical little boy.
The boy who unexpectedly confessed to the killings while police were interviewing him had neither a family member or an attorney present because police considered the youngster their prime witness not the killer. Prosecutors have charged the boy as an adult and he is scheduled to undergo psychological examinations to determine if he is competent to understand the gravity of his actions. In Arizona an eight year old can be tried as an adult, if it is shown he is competent to understand the charges against him, posses a basic understanding of court procedures and due process and is able to cooperate and assist his lawyers in his own defense.
Once that has been demonstrated to the satisfaction of a magistrate, the State must convince the judge the boy is beyond hope of rehabilitation in Arizona’s juvenile justice system. But Arizona is a deep-Red State known for draconian neoconservative laws. It allows prosecutors the option of deciding if the boy is incompetent to stand trial at this time, of detaining him in a psychiatric facility, until he is deemed competent. Then trying him as an adult.
Because St Johns is in Apache County, the want of metropolitan Phoenix media and radio outlets to inflame emotion is limited, and most authorities in the case stated prior to the gag order, getting the child appropriate psychiatric help and discovering the reason behind this tragedy is a primary goal.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackbackim sorry but 8yr old tried as a adult??? no way that could be fair, i have a 12yr old and can tell you thier ideas change daily, i do believe this boy needs some help and should have to undergo alot of counseling, but not tried as a adult, will they put him in jail with adults to, something had to be going on for a child to kill his parent, also i dont think he could of accually known the outcome(like his father would be gone forever) kids just dont understand that aspect, most 8yr olds i know still believe in santa, i only hope they get him help instead of shuffling him off to a institution for life
What I can’t fathom is that so many people automatically believe that whatever the police say is the gospel truth. Once a detective says an 8-year-old killed, everyone assumes it must be true. Cops have made mistakes before and they have certainly pushed to charge the easiest suspect rather than the right suspect. There are too many proven examples of that to have to argue the point. I would just mention a Chicago case of a few years ago when 2 pre-prubescent children were charged with rape and murder of a young girl. The case was preposterous on its face, as 7-year olds don’t ejaculate, and semen was found, but the kids “confessed” after a long interrogation without parent or lawyers or cameras present.
All the folks who pontificated on how children could be so evil had to take a bit of a step back when the semen was matched to some vagrant drug abuser. The kids, it turned out, had absolutely nothing to do with it.
One other point that seems to have escaped everyone’s attention is that the fact that 2 men were murdered could point to the murderer killing a witness to the primary attack, not necessarily a scenario where a kid is being attacked by two men in some kind of sick abuse situation. Sounds like one guy got it, and the second guy got it because he was in a position to witness the initial crime or potentially subdue the killer.
I believe they were killed in two different locations in the house. Could be an argument or whatnot led to the first murder and the second got it when the killer realized he’d been witnessed.
I have seen situations before where police in sleepy little towns don’t have the first notion of how to investigate crimes like this that they have likely never experienced before.
Ask someone in LA or Chicago what the crime scene says.
I don’t understand why they are not investigating Vincent’s wife Tiffany.
She was conveniently “gone” at the time. Can she prove it?
She was consistantly interferring between the boy and his mother. Not exactly what anyone would call a NICE person.
So why is she not under investigation?
The whole thing seems grossly unlikely. It does not seem probable that someone would sleep through or ignore four rifle shots. It does not seem probable that an 8-year-old would concoct such a plan and then randomly confess. What it sounds like is exactly what happened in Chicago. A handful of cops, instead of actually investigating, think they can accuse a child of murder and get away with it and they probably figured that trial by public would be the fastest way of doing that.
please god take care of this young boy he must be frightened at this time wrap your arms around him and keep him safe lord, and find the truth we have faith and love you lord god bless amen!
imsaying a extra prayer for this boy lord he seems to have no one please be with this child and let the truth out AMEN
imsaying a extra prayer for this boy lord he seems to have no one please be with this child and let the truth out AMEN
Unless the press is leaving out a lot of details, the way this case is being handled stinks to high heaven. There was a case a few years back where 2 kids about this kid’s age were charged with murder, I think in Chicago. They also confessed. If it wasn’t for a lot of national publicity the two kids probabably would have been charged, assigned a public defender, and probably convicted, as adults. Lukily they got a good defense attorney who took the case pro bono and used his own private investigators who turned up evidence proving the kids couldn’t possibly have done it. If I remember correctly the case never even went to trial. If you want to let the authorities know how you feel about this mess email

I live in Germany, -I read about the shocking story last week in a German newspaper, I was really shocked about the possibility, that an 8 year old kid can get a firearm and killed his father and another man, and I´m also shocked to read that an 8 year old kid can charged as an adult. I don´t know, what is shocking me more. I feel with the family of the boy, and also with the family who lost their father and husband.
In case, he was really the shooter, should the 8 year old boy charged as an adult for murder ? A question that in Germany would never be taken, a child couldn´t be sentenced at all, it must be 14 to appeal to a juvenile criminal law, a juvenile can first charged as adult if he/she is 18, not before. I agree that something must be happen to the boy, at last a kind of punishment. But a lot more as punishment, he need help, and in this case, a very lot of help, help and even love, the last thing, he normally can´t get in a prison. I try to imagine, how he must feel now, alone in a cell , nobody is there who sit beside him if he get nightmares, I´m sure the pictures will be coming back, again and again. And then a sentence maybe for lifetime in prison without parole, -that is killing ,very gruesome and slow. And if he go to a juvenile court, sentence for a long time, what did you get back, a child that grow up the most time of its live in prison, no love, getting nothing of all, that a child need for a human being?. (Both option´s are law of 19 century or earlier). I thing that makes it so difficult, to come to a right answer. I also thing that this is the case, you can´t sentence a child in Germany and in the most country´s of the world, before they reach a age, where you can be sure he or she really knows what he/she has done. I for myself come to the conclusion, if it must be, punish the boy for a short time and give him all the care he really need, than release him with a long time of probation I thing that will be the best way.
At last, Revenge feeling´s are normal in the moment, and I understand that the family and people who are direct involved, like to punished the boy as hard as possible, but is it really right? –useful? And at last, is it Christian?
I post this in another blog also, so if you thing you read this all way’s, you are right, but this is the extended version.
Innocent until proven guilty!!!!
What have the police done? All I see so far is the accusation of a child killing his father. Sometimes children are so scared they admit to something they did not do OR they get confused and jumble up there words and say something that adults take the wrong way. Police are trained to look for a suspect. You put a child in a room who is being questioned and he knows he is in trouble. He is scared, he may not look and sound scared but he is scared. HE had no one there to support him of comfort him while the police were drilling him. We only heard the first 12 minutes of that video. Where is the other hours of it? Why did the police release a video of a minor where you could clearly see the child’s face in one point of the video?
Come on people!!! Do we still live in the lynching days? USE YOUR BRAINS! Start asking questions, and stop automatically assuming what you read and hear in the media.
What if this was your own child? think about it!
I just listened to the released part of the ‘confession’ and my heart is breaking. Instead of comforting a little boy who said over and over that he FOUND his own father shot with blood on his face, they harassed him for four hours until he FINALLY “confessed.”
This is ridiculous. I hope he has a good attorney, family to support him, and a good therapist to help him through his loss, his subsequent treatment, and that he wasn’t allowed to grieve. Those police officers should be fired.
I just had a flashback to when I was eight and confessed to stealing my little brother’s Halloween candy. I didn’t do it, but Mom and Dad seemed sure I did and the lecture and pressure to ‘tell the truth’ seemed to go on forever.
I finally said I did it because I was tired and they weren’t believing me anyway. I figured that since they believed I did it, I was going to get in trouble for it anyway. Might as well ‘confess’ and save myself the rest of the interrogation. Here, the police implied knew someone who could prove he did it. My parents weren’t police officers and weren’t trained to get a confession, yet they were able to get a fake one out of me anyway because I realized they weren’t believing the truth. I was EIGHT.
This little boy was just that: a scared little eight year-old boy.
this title needs to be reworked, its ludicrous. “cold blooded killer.” Seriously?
Just a thought, folks…what about the possibility, ugly that it is, that this little boy has no feelings, isn’t scared and really did want to kill 2 men. I’m just considering the information in the interview and the sound of this child’s voice. Even psychopaths start out as children and we all know that psychopaths exist. Is he innocent…or a young killer?
I am so hurt for this child! No matter what happens from now on this child has his very own lable.(COLD BLOODED KILLER) I can’t believe a child that has had no previous history of violent behavior can be put through an adult system. I have 5 sons ranging from ages 2 to 17 and they are the light of my world. I cant imagine what I would do if someone interrogated my chid without me present. I do no one thing this interrogation crew that worked on this little boy needs a good taste of motherley justice!( I don’t mean a hug or a kiss!)
This is disgusting to hear and if you think for one min that he is just a COLD BLOODED KILLER you are just as crazy as the people who have accused him! Boys his age are thinking about Ben 10 or Poke’mon. they also can’t keep secrets. If it was premeditation he told someone.Find the truth.
Please pray that this child is taken care of with the justice he deserves. God will do the rest. One more thing pray for father and the friend. This is just a really bad situation.
I am outraged at some of the press and comments I have seen. There is no proof that has been presented anywhere, other than this so-called confession, that this boy committed this crime. The only fact we know is that two grown men were murdered and we do not know who did it. Can you imagine what damage has been done to this child if he was NOT the murderer? He has been handcuffed, his ankles shackled and dragged into a courtroom. He was not permitted to attend his father’s funeral. He has a whole country of morons talking about him. At this point he probably doesn’t know if he did it or not, since these adults have convinced him that he did. If they had the right to release this video, I would certainly like to see the videos of the interviews with the Mom and the step mom, too. If it comes out that he is innocent I hope all of his accusers give him the help he is going to need to get over this. God bless and keep this little boy safe.
I wish there were an email or website where we could send messages of support to the mother of this child.
It’s outrageous that a little boy would be treated this way.
I have an 8 yr old son, I have to remind him daily to brush his teeth, so I have a hard time beliving this little boy committed a a “Premeditated” act.
For those of you that have children this age (or any age) take a few minutes to discuss this news story with them. You may be suprised at what they have to say about it. And when you are done hug them and kiss them and thank god that you can……..
This is horrible, whoever suggested to try this little boy as an adult is a very sick person. He’s practically a baby, this is just awful. Why are they treating this cild this way, handcuffed/ankles shackled…who did this? This person who authroized this needs to be jailed. I have a 11 year old he is a very smart child, but I remind him everyday did you brush your teeth, comb your hair, what did your teacher say, your dad ect, he can’t remember lots of things and gets things mixed also he gets straight A’s in school one of the smartest in the 6th grad and he’s 11 this kid is only 8. Sorry no way is this kid a premediated murderer, the so called confession is no confession and and it’s horrible what they did to this kid. Where is the Step Mother, she’s not there for this little boy, that raises red flags to me..the kid needs to be released to his REAL Mother immediately and not bought back to Juvie he’s going to need some intense therapy.
Regardless of whether the child is guilty or innocent (and unlike the police in Arizona, I presume innocence until guilt is proven), our justice system has failed this child miserably. Not only is his so-called confession posted across the nation for all to see, but a child of the most vulnerable age (7 year olds cannot be charged with a crime) was exploited without defense to obtain a coerced confession. And to suggest that an 8 year old without any history of criminal activity or violence should be tried as an adult is sickening. And what’s the point in shackling an 8 year old? Are the police worried he’s going to overpower them? Either way, the police chief should be fired for his gross miscarriage of justice. There’s no way an 8 year old can comprehend the severity and finality of murder. It’s really an awful story – I hope he somehow gets the help he needs.
Arizona! The world is watching!!!
Shame on the police department tring to hang this child by publicly releasing only the information that makes him apear to be cold blooded. We are not ignorant and can see so many flaws in this case. First of all the first video released, released the childs name about six minutes into the interrogation.
Shame on you for throwing
this child to the media wolves who just want to sell a story as gruesome
as they can paint it.
Have some dignity. This child is helpless among the injustice. I pray everyone stands up against whats going on, we have all been eight years old at one time and know what it was like. Dont play us as fools Arizona you will be sorry!!!!!
Everyone
People judging, angry, seeming to know the unknown. The title of this should be,”Cold Blooded Parents.” One thousand spankings, one thousand heart breaks, one thoushand times to a mannerly boy with excelent grades!.What kind of animals did this little boy have to live his short life with? My god ,pray this child has someone to hold him and comfort him finally,as he has been deserving of all along. You are heathens to think other wise and condem the child.Divirce hurts even the well loved and cared for child ,yet along his crappy life. How many more are raised this way in this town? Seems many towns people have strange ideas of an ideal life for a young boy.
The parents had a dog in a cage.No yard. Border as family figure in the home who he also took orders from.Something sick about the life he had to live.Only father son inter action,1000 spanking and teaching to shoot a gun an kill animals.Warm fuzzy feelings for a little boy in a home that looks like a truck stop and a stepmother.A lot of people should be ashamed.
That an 8 year old could shoot two grown men 4 times each, while having to reload after every shot, seems difficult to imagine.
That neighbors heard the last 4 shots, but didn’t hear the first 4 shots, is interesting. The second victim also didn’t hear any shots (while standing in the driveway talking on his phone just prior to entering the house and being shot).
Victim #2′s wife says that while talking to her husband on his cell phone, she heard the boy call to him for help (I’m wondering how close the boy would need to be to that cell phone for somebody on the other end to hear every word he said). Did the police ask the boy why he called to him, instead of just waiting for the man to enter the house when he got off the phone? I’d be interested to hear the answer; to see if it made sense. I mean, if he had patiently waited for his dad to come into the house to shoot him, why not just wait for this man to enter as well?
The most important Q would be: was there gunshot residue (GSR) on the child’s clothing (shirt) and specifically on his face, and in his nostrils and ears? GSR travels and if he fired this gun, especially 8 times, GSR should be found in these areas. You can’t just test his hands since GSR can be transferred there if he touched the victim (who might have had GSR on clothing if shot at a fairly close range). These tests are imperative. Hopefully the police did these tests the second the child *confessed*.
Lastly, if the police only interviewed this child a 2nd time because victim #2′s wife insisted they do it because she thought he knew something, then they should have had an advocate/lawyer for this child! Duh. I believe the courts just released a convicted murderer for this very reason (crime committed as a child/confession obtained without counsel present). To get convictions (and make them stick) we need to play by the rules, whether we like them or not.
I wonder if someone shot his dad and the little boy seen his dad laying there suffering and the boy got scared thinking the person was going to come after him, so he got the gun and seen his dad suffering and his dad taught him to shoot animals if they are suffering and at his young age maybe he thought that is what he’s suppose to do to people to? Then he called for help from Tim but he was scared and when Tim came in he thought it was the killer come after him and he shot Tim to protect himself? I also have a feeling someone else could be behind this whole mess. But I feel the treatment they’ve given this child is horrible and I don’t agree with the way they are handling this at all. They also state they never found a journal stating 1000 spankings, and I can see my oen little boy telling CPS (if he were spanked which he is not and I don’t beleive in hitting a child) oh I get spanked alot probably after 1000 then that will be it meaning his dad will probably stop then not that he is going to kill his dad after 1000. I really don’t know but again the treatment they have given this child is just horrible I feel. Also the adults in the home should not having been hitting on this child or having a gun and bullets available for him to reach.
I was wondering myself about this small town, everyone knows everyone? You know about a possible cover up going on. I know it may sound like a far reach. But then it turns out that the blonde officer in the interrogtion video is the boys neighbor. She Knew his family and him and she said he used to hang out in her front yard playing with her dog. Yah and whats up with the hundred dollar bills laid out in the crime scene photos? They said something about possible drug relations involved! Come on why is there not more investagation going on? The defense stated today that they still havent even recieved the forensic evidence in this case! and the procecution has already offered to drop one charge and a plea deal, whats the hurry prosection? something is just not right. I think Its time the fbi gets involved. Who are Tiffanys relatives in this town? What are everyones ties with eachother even the police department should be investigated!!!
This little boy is no way capiable of murder! The interrigation shows it all! He, in no way said “yes, I killed my father”!! He was consistant with what happened for a half hour and the police would not leave him alone. The police interrigating him guided him what they wanted to hear! This is an outrage, my heart and prays got out to him!
Also, if you have not watched the interrigation… and all of it, you have no guards to accuse this little boy! There would have been a huge amount of evidence that pointed to him… if he did… and where is it? He is only eight PEOPLE… he would not be an expert on how to kill and get rid of all the evidence!! Just because it was his gun means nothing.
This little boy said when he first went to the house, Tim was on the floor… that is why he then was called for he dad and went upstairs to find him on the ground also! There was no loop holes in his story…NONE for a HALF HOUR! Then the police put words into this little boys mouth. This little boy, only EIGHT mind you… just lost his dad!
This all makes me sick to my stomach! I do believe the truth will come out and I thank God that the interrigation was taped!!
Even more terrifying than the possibility of an 8 year boy being accused of murders he probably could not have committed is that there are actually adults wanting to murder him, not much more than a baby. Even worst, is the fact that these adults are the ones we count on to protect us.
A police chief demanding the death of a young child is just disgusting. It makes me question him as a person and even more, him as a law enforcement officer. The district attorney is just as bad, both of them should be made to step down. The police who questioned the boy should be arrested and prosecuted for gross violations of his rights.
What amazes me is that if he were an adult all charges would be dropped because his rights were violated in every way possible. Not having an adult there on the boys side was illegal in every way possible.
The boy had to have been terrified. It seems like there is a big possibility not having anyone to protect him was just a way of life for him. The violence toward him by his step mother proved his dad was not there for him and his mother living in another state proves she was not there for him.
The thought that he may really have come home to find his father and friend dead and then, instead of being comforted and protected he was arrested, locked away and put through hours of interriogation and then hauled off to court, at times in shackles is just heart wrenching. What type of monster could bring himself to shackle a child. I guess the same type of monsters who could do all the injustices that have been done to him since the murders and the same type of monsters that would demand he be murdered.
I have cried for this little boy since the murders hapened. The thought that any one could think an 8 year old could be capable of reloading 8 times is just redicilous.
Why is the step mother not in jail and why would a fit father allow his child to be spanked 5 times over school work, much less anything else. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors. I do not understand how anyone can say there definantly was not abuse in the home. No one was there to see what was going on.
I agree with fhamilton. Folks, like it or not sociopaths do exist in this world, and they were once children. Why is it impossible for a child to commit a murder in cold blood? Because you think all children are innocent? Because you love your son or daughter so much that you can’t fathom them committing such a heinous act? Well, this boy is not your child, and it is possible that he did everything they’ve accused him of doing. Now, should the police have conducted their investigation differently? Yes. Should this boy be tried as an adult? No way, not in my opinion. You have to admit, however, that there is a possibility, however slight, that this boy is a premeditated murderer. If you don’t admit the possibility, you’re considering this only from an emotional perspective. Not a good idea.
