Peace cannot be achieved in the Middle East so long as Israel continues to steal Palestinian land, terrorize Palestinians, crush any hopes they have of having their own country (or even earning enough of a living to feed their family), and viewing all Arabs and Muslims as one undifferentiated mass of murderous killers.

Israel has successfully radicalized the vast majority of Palestinians and they have been reaping the harvest of that for years now. Attitudes like Mr. Shiffman's are indicative that nothing will change until attitudes like his change and Israelis recognize their own culpability in creating this state of affairs.

I agree with the assessment made by Shimon Klein in respect of the Israel political scene. However,I would like to make two observations: a) recent polls indicate that the Meretz Party should receive 7-8 seats in the General Election and not 4-5 seats as mentioned in Shimon Klein's article and b) no mention is made in the article that, in order for any Israel government to succeed with the peace process, there is a need for a genuine
Palestinian partner to emerge.

This is not likely to happen any time in the near future. The strength of Hamas, with its goal to destroy Israel, is growing daily. The goal to destroy Israel is deeply implanted in the minds of the Arab/Moslem world and therefore peace is but a remote dream. This is the prime reason why peace cannot be achieved no matter who forms the next government in Israel after the next election.
