history of trees the sequel

I’m a nerd, no lie about it.  And now one of the greatest contributions to nerd life is ready on DVD once again.

Starting this October 28th, now available as a four disc collectors edition boxed set from Shout Factory comes the anniversary collection of everyone’s favorite show about yelling back at a movie screen.  Mystery Science Theater 3000 – 20th Anniversary Edition is ready to blast off into your living room and leave you on your own Satellite of Love.  Bring home this fantastic and delightfully nostalgic four disc set today!

This show, first broadcast exactly twenty years ago, is completely hilarious and one of the holiest grails in nerd life.  This boxed set includes four films.  They are First Spaceship On Venus, Laserblast, Werewolf, and Future War.  Each show consists of the host, either Joel Hodgson or Mike Nelson, and then the four robots – Cambot, Gypsy, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot.  The shtick is that Servo, Crow and Mike or Joel sit in front of the movie screen and make hilarious comments throughout this collection of some of the worst movies ever seen.  As far as what each movie is about, I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I will say that Future War is about an advanced race of cyborgs who live in the future that time travel back into the past to steal humans and breed them as slaves.  Sometimes the slaves escape to earth in the present time, not the cyborgs’ future or the slaves’ past, and so to track the slaves, the cyborgs went even farther back in time and got some dinosaurs that they train to track slaves.  So one slave escapes to Los Angeles and meets up with a nun who used to be a hooker and has friends in gangs all across east LA.  How awesome is that!

The special features included in this four disc box sets are four hilarious movie covers, one for each disc, the original trailers for each film, a reunion panel for the show filmed at Comic-Con 2008, a three part history of the show with interviews with creators, cast and crew and so much more.

I remember seeing reruns of this show on Comedy Central and on the Sci Fi Channel, but I had no idea that it had originally come from my own backyard.  It was developed and the first season was shot at a local channel here in Minneapolis and actors, voices and writers all came from within the Twin Cities stand-up community.  That was especially news for me, as I didn’t know we had a stand-up community.  There is an extra connection for me because of the origin of the show, but it’s the fantastic writing and complete flood of cultural references that really get me.  This was such an incredible idea for a show that I’m still just blown away by it.  I can’t explain how good these four films are, you will simply have to check them out on your own.

No Mystery about it, this show is completely fantastic.
