Bill Cosby’s legal problems may be over. According to Associated Press reports, Cosby settled a civil lawsuit with a woman who claims Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her. Terms of the settlement were not released. Cosby’s attorneys say he gave the woman Benadryl because she was stressed and had problems sleeping.

Cosby, the star of the hit sitcom The Cosby Show, isn’t the first celebrity to be hit with a lawsuit, and he won’t be the last. Celebrities are targets for lawsuits because of their fame and wealth. The lawsuits run the gamut. One man who now is called the “most pathetic panhandler” sued Michael Jordan because he is always mistaken for the basketball player and it has “ruined his life.” Jennifer Lopez was sued by a TV writer who says Lopez stole an idea for a new TV show.

Why do they settle? To avoid the lengthy, costly court process and minimize damage to their careers and reputations. And both parties are, if not satisfied, pacified. The filing of lawsuits will never stop. It’s just one more thing celebrities will have to deal with in order to have their fame.

And, of course, it can go to the other way. Celebrities like Bruce Willis have sued the paparazzi for various reasons, such as defamation.
