A woman and her husband have filed an asbestos related lawsuit in Madison County Circuit Court after she was diagnosed with the deadly asbestos related cancer mesothelioma. Maggie L Wallace was diagnosed with the disease, which comes from exposure to airborne asbestos dust and fibers, early in August.

The couple claims that the cancer was wrongfully caused and has filed the lawsuit naming one hundred and seventeen companies as defendants. The lawsuit was filed last week. It claims that Maggie contracted the cancer as a result of secondary exposure from the asbestos dust and fibers that her husband, Leroy Wallace, brought home on his work clothes.

The lawsuit states that the companies should have forseen the problems and known about the dangers, and should have taken precautions accordingly. It also states that Maggie has suffered disfigurement, mental anguish, physical pain, loss of earnings, and medical costs as a result of the condition.

Mr Wallace further claims that his wife’s illness means that he has suffered loss of companionship. Amongt the amounts that the couple are looking to claim are punitive damages of over one hundred thousand dollars, and compensatory damages of over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
