Liberal Democrats are notorious for their cafeteria-style system of religion, the rhetoric of which they use solely for political purposes. Nancy Pelosi, anyone?
Although neither political party has a monopoly on the adherence to and application of Biblical principles to politics and governance, the Left especially loves to pick and choose which parts of the Bible they will uphold while conveniently ignoring explicit doctrines in areas that disagree with their political self interests.
In fact, liberal Democrats have repeatedly proven themselves to be incapable of understanding absolute moral truths at all.
Consider both the congressional and presidential elections of 2004. The defense of marriage was a hot-button issue at the federal level and also in several states (the author’s being one of them—Kentucky) in which a marriage protection amendment was on the ballot. The overwhelming majority of state and congressional Republicans sided with the Biblical model of marriage as a matter of commonsense understanding. As a result, a pro-marriage president was elected, and each state marriage amendment was lopsidedly passed even in “liberal states.”
How did the Democrats respond to their trip to the woodshed? Discerning their need to appeal to evangelical “values voters” – whose galvanized forces helped steer numerous elections – did Dems change significant planks in the party platform to mirror those of the Republican Party? Encourage Democrat candidates to change positions on issues to those favored by voters? Line up their party’s stances with Biblical positions that voters soundly endorsed?
No, rejecting common sense (not unusual among liberals), they held a convention for themselves to determine what they needed to do capture a larger share of the evangelical vote!
Duh…!
Last Wednesday (Sept. 10), Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee – a Barack Obama supporter – compared the Democrat presidential nominee to Jesus Christ while likening Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who delivered Jesus into the hands of His executioners.
According to a FOX News report (http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/09/10/tennessee-rep-compares-obama-to-jesus-suggests-palin-is-pilate/), Cohen stated, “If you want change, you want the Democratic Party. Barack Obama was a community organizer like Jesus… Pontius Pilate was a governor.”
There is certainly a great deal to unpack here.
In Matthew 16:13-17 (NKJV), Jesus asked His disciples two provoking questions: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? …But who do you say that I am?”
The first question was an assessment of what prevailing public opinion said about Jesus, and the disciples’ report – that many thought of Him only as a past or resurrected human prophet – was inadequate, and therefore, incorrect.
But Peter cut to the heart of the matter in answering the second question, saying confidently, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Just as with the public opinion of Christ in His own day, the characterization of Jesus as merely “community organizer” – as opposed to world Reconciler – ridiculously misses the point of His work, reveals a complete lack of understanding of Christ and Christianity, and diminishes His purpose on earth. Each of these is a routine achievement of liberal Democrats.
Jesus Christ was – and continues to be – the Savior of the world. Jesus spent some 33 years out of His eternal existence encased in human flesh as a man, experiencing and suffering the painful and difficult elements of life tainted by human sin.
Jesus’ purpose was not to organize a community, but to save a world! (This is not to suggest the concept of universal salvation, an un-Biblical notion which holds that every person is automatically heaven bound. No, salvation and a heavenly destination are only obtained by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.)
Christ was the divine-human channel through which Jehovah God would redeem and reconcile a sinful human race to Himself. Jesus’ more intimate, local work with the nation of Israel and the surrounding environs could only by foolishness be characterized as “community organizing.” His work in Israel was to prepare a people and nation to be salt and light to the world such that all people and nations would have the opportunity to receive eternal security with God.
If liberal Democrats want to compare Barack Obama, their political messiah/savior, to Jesus Christ, perhaps they should go beyond political silliness, cease foolish Biblical misapplications and mischaracterizations, seriously examine the Person and work of Christ, and then compare – er, contrast – His words and works with Obama’s, whose “Christian” faith remains in serious doubt.
Such a serious scrutiny would doubtlessly reveal how woefully Obama fails to measure up to any similarity to Jesus Christ.
Jesus came into the world to facilitate an understanding of the nature of God. His initial purpose with Israel was to manifest the kingdom of God and return them – as God’s chosen people – to God’s ways and standards. Barack Obama and his liberal party stand for just the opposite: to separate a nation from its Judeo-Christian heritage through the politics of un-Biblical, anti-American liberalism.
How can that compare with Jesus?

What truly disgusts me is how many so-called-Christians have subverted the true meaning of the mythos of Jesus Christ. It is far better, in some eyes, to turn Jesus into God walking in human form rather than the true message that this should inspire: Jesus was a man who was chosen by God to become something greater than just a man… to become in spirit the Son of God.
In short, we all have the potential to be Jesus, should we love our fellow man and woman and strive to live according to the tenets that were espoused by Jesus: to treat others as we ourselves would want to be treated, to forgive others their faults, to in essence Be Nice To Each Other.
Being Holier than Thou is not what Jesus wants, and to cast stones like this is to be unChristian. Indeed, if you believe in the mythos that Satan is an agent of Evil (rather than the pre-Paul stories where Satan was the Judge, an agent of God that tested mankind to determine if he was lacking or not) then you are enhancing Satan’s own work to spread hate and discord across the world.
Being Christian is more than just hollow words and hollow condemnations. It is acting true to the words Christ put forth. You disgrace the true spirit of Jesus with these actions and need to take a strong serious look at your path to determine if you truly want to be an individual with a heart full of hate… or one who realizes that all of us, be they Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Pagan, Jewish, or any other religion, are worthy in the eyes of the Creator and in Jesus.
And yes, that even includes atheists.
It is unfortunate that Mr. Cohen said what he said (if indeed your quote is accurate) because the purpose of the current meme “Jesus was a community organizer, Pilate a governor” was NOT to suggest that Barack Obama is “like Jesus” — it was to ask, what exactly does Sarah Palin (a governor) have against community organizers?
Palin and Giuliani used words that sounded as if they were looking down elitist noses at community organizers, aiming to ridicule Obama’s early work as one as meaningless. One possible response to that is to think of one of the most famous, beloved, and successful people in history to have been the same thing being ridiculed and ask, “does Sarah Palin want to ridicule ______ too?” Well in this case they filled in the blank with Jesus. Was Jesus a community organizer? Debate that all you want.
But please don’t make sweeping generalizations about what “liberal Democrats” are thinking (or what they know) just because Mr. Cohen used a poor choice of words.
Barack Obama is NOT like Jesus, any more than the rest of us are “like Jesus” (which, of course, in some ways we all are, which is a large part of the whole reason Jesus had to exist). In fact I bet Barack Obama would be one of the first people to tell you he’s no Jesus.
But guess what? Neither are Sarah Palin and John McCain.
WoW!!!!!!!!!!right on Dr. Jones!!!!!!!
the dems. have way over stepped the bounds this time…I hope that this wakes up the drug obama supporters and they see the light…Vote McCain/Palin!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting…
You describe Jesus in many ways in your article, but nowhere do you disprove the fact that he was, indeed, also a community organizer.
I like the way you’ve used this platform to talk about Jesus but I think you are also picking and choosing when disagree the likening of Jesus to a community organizer, because He did perform deeds that Community Organizers perform today - advocating for the poor, empowering peole, improving their quality of life, etc. And I wonder if you are trully a Christian how you can judge someone’s profession of faith in Christ by saying Obama’s faith is in serious doubt. Do you doubt Macain’s faith? Bush’s faith?
Oh, lighten up. This was just a cheeky comeback to all the Republican guff about community organizers. And, yes, Cohen was taking the quote too seriously as well.

Do you doubt Macain’s faith? Bush’s faith, and your own faith?
Oh, I see, I think you tend to doubt the faith of anyone who does not agree with your understanding of “absolute moral truths”.
Dr. Jones…you are actually a Pharisee….not a Christian.
Here’s the deal. Republican folks claim to be religious and yet constantly use or eagerly allow False Witness (one of the Ten Commandments). They propagate lies, distortions, and innuendo all in the name of God. Because in their feeble minds and limited understanding of Christianity they believe that abortion is murder and that murder is a sin worse than False Witness. The end justify the means sort of thing. However what they don’t realize is that Sin is Sin and all sin means death according to the bible. You can’t be more dead than dead. So their lying is as great as sin as a woman having an abortion or someone committing murder. And they do it several times a day with such vigor and delight.
So, as a real Christian, not a self-righteous Pharisee, I’m going to vote for the candidate that espouses Jesus’ real values: temperance, kindness, compassion, and doing for others. I won’t however vote for the evil party that is lies, wars, hatred, and greed…even if they are against abortion. Sanctimonious
Self-Righteousness as exposed by Dr. Jones and many in the GOP is an abomination (filthy rags) to God. Lastly let us not forget what the bible tells us…you can tell the value of a man by the fruit he bears. What he sows…so shall he reap. Can anyone…ANYONE…say that the last 8 years of war, destruction, lies, complete lack of compassion are Godly virtues as espoused by Jesus Christ? I’ll take any Democrats harvest over the GOP anyday.
Jesus was also a carpenter. He did manual labor. He also thought his followers to love God above all and his neighbor as himself.
In Ps. 59 David complains about those that oppose him and calls them “barking dogs” and calls the verbal abuse “belching”.
He suffered in all things except sin. If we compare ourselves or Obama to Christ we come up with a real problem.
I am thankful we have a candidate who is not afraid to put God first. Let us pray for a revival that God will do great things for this country and bring it back to what it was. The pilgrims left their own countries to flee from persecution, physical and verbal. This country has become just like the countries our forefathers fled from. So I plead with you all, Let us storm the throne of Grace that God will be merciful to this country and that we may return to the old paths. Let us repent of our own lack of concern and prayer and also for the sin of this country.

You say ‘I am thankful we have a candidate who is not afraid to put God first.’
Please clarify. Are you speaking of Sen. Obama or Sen. McCain? Because if it is the later, I would suggest you reconsider because God said ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’.
Answer to AnnapolisMDI was speaking of Governor Palin. God has used many woman in history and God can use her to change McCain. She said the other day that she is for what we can do for God and not
for what God can do for us. If this is how she feels than there is hope. That is my prayer. You know too that no one is perfect. We all fall short in our walk and that is why Jesus sits at the right hand of His Father to interceed for our mistakes. I do not hate or dislike Sen. Obama I just don’t agree with most of what he stands for. If I look at that then I can not vote for him. I believe God is against abortion, homosexuality, same sex marriage. Those things are important to me.
I know I sure don’t always do to others as I want them to do to me. and I am sure it is the same with you. We are sinners and will remain sinners until by the grace of God we may be with him forever. What a glorius day that will be. When that day comes that we may see Him in all His beauty do you think we will see each others faults?
Right now my main concern is for my children, grandchildren and future additions, if the Lord tarries is that they may serve God and not be persecuted for it, whether it is subtle or physical persecution.
I hope that clears it up for you.
Go get ‘em SW Missouri!
You just got told Dr. Walter Jones!
Amazing you teach bible school, but do not understand the bible?
Jesus was not hired by anyone to unite others for the sake of common self-interest. It is a ridiculous analogy that deserves another: King Harod promoted baby-killing…just like B.Hussein
HE PASSES BY THE BEGGARS
It is eternal winter there
Within the proud warmonger´s soul,
As death and killing take their toll,
Humanity beyond repair.
O, how he spouts some high ideals
Of what is right and what is wrong,
And echoing conviction strong
His wife confirms how she too feels.
Yes, let us call them, as we may
Mr. & Mrs. Republican–
Their son, of age to be a man
Has got deferment, by the way.
The commerce of the corporations
Must not be stymied in its course,
Thus he affirms; and in his purse
Collects in coin considerations.
One has to fill the gas tank up;
His car is like a mini-tank
And glides so smooth, you know his rank
Was not achieved by beggar´s cup.
