In a recent ad running on television stations in battleground states, the Obama campaign mocks John McCain’s inability to use a computer, portraying him as out of touch. After the ad began to air, Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said “It’s extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn’t know how to send an e-mail.”

The reason for McCain’s technical old-fashioned stance: he cannot use a computer because of the damage to the muscles and nerves in his arms, sustained when he crashed his jet and subsequently was beaten by the Viet Cong. He cannot type, comb his hair, or tie his shoes. Perhaps as part of the Obama’s oft-repeated claim that they will be “getting tough”, their next hilariously effective ad can compare McCain to Trig Palin in these regards.

McCain can’t send an e-mail because he can’t type on a keyboard, from injuries received in service to his country. Obama apparently can’t use Google. And as a result, he’s just run an ad mocking John McCain’s physical disability. Classy!

(The Boston Globe reported on the extent of McCain’s injuries in 2000, although I think most people knew them by now - its towards the end, you can just search for “shoes”.)

This one would have been a blunder just on its face - 20% of Americans, mostly older folks, can’t or don’t use computers. Insulting and alienating that group of voters seems like a poorly-considered decision, given the level of voting participation in that demographic. The ignorance of the reason for McCain’s lack of computer skill and/or the mind-boggling insensitivity of the ad is just another indication of the staggeringly poor level of judgment we can expect from Obama.
