An Iranian-American engineer has received as multi million dollar compensation award from a Los Angeles jury in relation to an asbestos claim. Amanollah Shahabi has been awarded nearly fifteen million dollars by the jury after it was found that he had been exposed to deadly asbestos, which led to him developing the asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma.
The plaintiff is said to have worked in oil refineries for over forty years, thirty years of which were spent working at oil refineries in Iran . The trained engineer was involved in commissioning oil refineries for the state-run National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).
According to the complaint he was regularly exposed to asbestos containing parts and products, and asbestos coated products in the course of his work. He moved to the United States in the 1980s, and continued to work as a consultant whilst working towards gaining American citizenship.
An attorney working on the case said: “This case is remarkable on several counts. It may well be the first-known asbestos exposure liability case where the construction contractor was held responsible for the effects of defective products that it installed but did not manufacture.â€
