I am not sure if I was the only commentator, of a liberal bent, who welcomed John McCain’s securing of the Republican Party’s nomination for President. I guess that I was so relieved that it seemed that whatever the election outcome a line could be drawn beneath the repulsive Bush/Cheney years – and the NeoCons could be banished forever. What I failed to realise, and inexcusably failed to research, was that John McCain’s views – now turned into a policy platform – are such that no liberal could ever sign up to them. McCain’s choice of the Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate confirms that McCain is now not that far away from being Bush Mark Three.
George Bush would not have been elected as President of the United States without the unequivocal support of the religious right. This led him to adopt many positions which defied logic and credibility – as well as being intellectually and morally repugnant. There are plenty of examples but his view that the scientifically bereft nonsense of “Intelligent Design†should be taught in schools alongside Evolution science is a good example. “Both sides ought to be properly taught . . . so people can understand what the debate is about.” Bush said – as if the science of evolution and the ignorant fiction of “Intelligent Design†have some sort of cerebral equivalence.
It now emerges that Sarah Palin also believes that creationism should be taught in schools – so that helps McCain balance his ticket and make inroads with the bible-bashing masses who deny evolution. Indeed Mrs Palin’s whole track record is such that dumb old Dubya himself has called her choice “exciting†– in other words she hits the buttons that he wants to see hit. No doubt Mike Huckabee will be in queue to endorse her choice as well (perhaps he already has).
“The Economist†magazine, which in principle quite likes McCain, has called on him to move away from “Hawkish foreign policy, irresponsible tax cuts, more talk about religion and abortion: all this sounds too much like Bush Three…â€. McCain’s illiberal positions on abortion, his war-mongerly aggressive stance on Iran, his nonsensical call for a “gas-tax holiday†and the rest of his right wing populist platform means that he is advocating not change but more of the same. Indeed in some respects (and the choice of Palin is one of them) is out-Bushing Bush! McCain is emerging as  a cynical opportunist with unpleasant views and dangerous policies. America should send McCain/Palin packing on November 4th. I hope they do.

Sarah Palin is the answer to my prayers. I can now go to the polls and vote a come home feeling good that I did the right thing. She has not been tarnished by the vultures in Washington and I hope she never is. Most of them are just there holding their hands out for the perks of
the office.
She is like a big breath of fresh air after waking up from all the smog..
God bless you Sarah and be with you.
Amen nanapete. Sarah Palin was a refreshing, invigorating choice by John McCain. Unfortunately it is not viewed that way by those with a left-wing populist platform that puts self first, country second.
“self first, country second” is your name “moronman”. If that were how the left was described why would you be complaining about taxes, and welfare programs and them wanting to protect the environment over drilling for oil? How would the left put themselves first if they are looking to help the ENTIRE POPULATION not just a certain segment. Sarah Palin is a woman whom is being used as a “token” to pander votes. Even if she personally is a “breath of fresh air” the AIR IS Poluted in the Policys of Bush and his would be predecessor.
Lastly, Palin’s acceptance speech sounded like a single dating add – “I like snowmobile racing, shooting guns and fishing and Mooseburgers are my favorite food.” Moronman & nanapete you two can not be that simple minded that her being place on the ticket gets your vote? Nanapete sounds like a older person, you likely would benefit from the policies Obama has to offer people with health care concerns, taxes and/or wage per hour & equal pay…. Just cause they dress conservative does not me they are going to help the people that dress like em- come on “simple minded is as simple minded VOTES!”
Think about this and employer provided health care. Obama’s program provides to supplement the employer provided health care that didnt cover expenses and provide health care, on government employee standards, to be given to all who dont have it….
Now, with that in mind…please tell me the incentives employers would have to provide health care if the government provides it? Will most of America, who has employer provided health care, lose it under Obama’s plan….
Its a dangerous plan and threatens middle America with loss of their health benefits.
I don’t believe he thinks like middle class America because he has never worked in private enterprise….and he doesn’t realize how important those “benefits” are. He has always been taken care of by government and government grants and funding.
You are wrong my friend, the man was born into the private sector! Regarding Health Care, some employers provide health care benefits for their employees in which the employer pays the cost-those insurance plans cost per members are based on the # of employees within a company that carries the ins. The company also, get tax write offs for providing insurance, just like a company gets write offs for expense to run a company. IE equipment, vehicle, gas, travel and stay, food, Marketing…Same when a company decides to provide Health Insurance to it’s employees. Some company’s provide the choice to carry insurance but the employee pays-also the individual can write off a portion of their health exp. on taxes. The fact is if the entire country had the chance to get on the same health plan that ALL OF THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, state levels, past president and present and their family members that would make the PREMIUM COST of health insurance go down, thus making health care prices lower. So if you have health insurance your present premium would be lowered based on the over all # of people on the plan. Also, the Insurance companies are the one that are making BILLIONS off of the american people and turning away claims regardless if one has paid premiums for yrs. Example I have ins. my family premium is currently $720.00 a month, my daughter went to the emergency room and the insurance would not cover the stay because they said it could have waited and been seen by a regular doctors visit. Also, after a yr of having ins. with this company they raised the renewel premium to $1000.00 a month. Fair?
With that said, some companies do not provide ins. are cutting ins. do not provide sick days or vacation days-even if a person has worked for 20 years…People all people have the right to health care and I believe sick days at least- no matter where you work.
2lb.- John McCain is married to a BILLIONARE, current owns 8 homes and recently said on National TV that he considered middle class to be household incomes of under 5 million dollars. First, of all I do not fault the man for his wealth, but I do for him not knowing the National Average Income of the country he wants to lead. Mr. McCain is not the man that is in touch with private enterprise. Yes, he served his country in war, but then he became a senator…no private enterprise. Also, he is 71 years old if elected he would be 72 when in office, he has had two battles with deadly cancer.. Do you honestly believe Sarah Palin could lead the country, make decision regarding foreign policy? She also, said in June that she did not keep up on the affair in Irag in a interview she had.
Sarah Palin has more executive experience than Barack Obama and Joe Biden combined. She is as qualified to make a “decision regarding foreign policy” as they are, but none are as qualified as John McCain at this point.
To think that a bright, intelligent, hard-working mother is not as qualified to hold national office as is a bright, intelligent black man is just plain sexist. I think Sarah Palin understands the situations facing the American people and families just as well as Barack Obama does, if not moreso.
Hey There, Have you heard the news… The right wing conservative VP Pick Sarah Palin’s teenager daughter in a unwed 5 month pregnant girl. Hmmm, if you are teaching your child those values that you right wingers claim others are not… how did this young lady get pregnant? My guess is it was on purpose-she just wanted to staert a family at a young age so she can play with them while she is still young(Sarcasm) I guess Palin may have some other “stains” on your Conservative “do as I say not as I do” Party. Oh, I know, I can already hear you telling me not to judge her and it happen to everyone, it is a teenage thing. But, it is so interesting when you change your RIGHT WING BS when it is one of your own. LOL! LMAO!
So McCain selects a woman to enhance his appeal to the religious right – one who seemingly signs up to the evangelical imperatives of family values etc. And that woman has a teenage daughter who screws around and furthermore gets herself impregnated.
The issues in play:
(1) How phoney is Palin?
(2) How good is McCain’s judgement ?
(3) Has anyone been telling porky Pies here? If so who?
