why shouldn't the gorillas receive attention?? are they the ones fighting? do they deserve to die so that the people fighting can fight? people die in wars and it is people's choice. the planet is already over populated with billions of people. it makes all the sense in the world to worry about the gorillas. this article is a shining example of how selfish people can be and not worthy of life on this planet. the writer of this is certainly a grerat example of this. may you die a cruel death.

Nancy,

As you probably know, reporting on Democratic Republic of Congo hasn't changed significantly over the last several years- that is until the gorilla killings. Up until the last two years very little international coverage has been given to the great instability in eastern DRC. The killing of gorillas last year gave wide spread international coverage.

It’s very frustrating when gorillas receive more attention than the humans yet this is what sells. Attention and support of gorilla conservation is needed but when that trumps the suffering of humans then our priorities are warped.

One defense I would give for gorillas receiving more attention is the fact that the average person can make a difference through awareness and donating to conservation efforts. If it’s a reputable conservation organization the human population living in proximity to the gorilla habitat should benefit from these conservation projects.

Countless Congolese have suffered from the instability that continues in the east. Rape, murder, kidnapping, raids on villages and exploitation of resources have all taken a tremendous toll. Until international pressure is increased and the perpetrators are removed, defeated and repatriated the people of DRC will continue to suffer and live in doubt.

I would say that even though there is no balance in reporting we must make the best of the exposure from the gorilla killings. In this case, it does bring much needed attention to the plight of the Congolese people and, yes, the gorillas.
