As a feminist, I’m pleased that Senator McCain has picked Sarah Palin for his choice as Vice president.
Actually, I’ve written about her before HERE, about when she decided to fly home to have her baby in Alaska when she started having signs of going into labor in Texas.
The pundits so far seem to have gotten a lot of things wrong. A quick scan of the headlines say she is an ex beauty queen (uh, fellahs, check out Miss Congeniality. It’s a scholarship program). Other pundits say she has no experience in foreign affairs (as opposed to a two week tour de force by Obama?) and lacks experience (ditto. She has been governor about as long as Obama has been a Senator).
But there are things that the pundits didn’t notice yet.
One: unlike many political women, she is not a harridan. And her husband is both a fisherman and a well known sportsman.
Yes, maybe being married to the four time winner of the Iron Dog race may not mean much to argula eating snobs, but it might impress the ESPN voters.
Second, Palin is a member of the NRA. Again, this doesn’t sit well in Chicago or with the media, but to those of us who lived in rural towns where we couldn’t jog for fear of being attacked by bears, and where the first day of deer season is a school holiday, owning a rifle is part of growing up. And that includes women. I don’t hunt, but one winter my petit nurse, mother of five, went out and got her elk. Yum. Elk Kielbasa.
Three: Hillary voters are watching. Again, as I had pointed out, if you go by popular vote, Hillary either won or lost by a fraction of a percentage point, but the press was so pro Obama that few people are aware of that fact. The press coverage against Hillary still smarts. If the press uses similar sexism against Palin, expect some of Hillary’s women to notice Obama playing the anti woman card again.
Four: The blue collar vote is more likely to go for McCain. Palin’s husband is a fisherman, but she often helps the family’s business during the busy season. Yes, Biden might be the son of “coal miners” (actually, he grew up in Scranton, not in a coal town, but never mind. The press wouldn’t know the difference), but one won’t see photos of him getting his hands dirty.
Five: The prolife angle. Obama’s choice of an abortion supporting Senator, along with Pelosi telling the Catholic bishops they are wrong is another story “under the fold”. Quite a few Catholic bishops have corrected her publicly, and the one third of Catholics who actually go to church might notice.
Obama might have found Jesus, and Biden will throw his rosary beads down the throat of anyone who questions his religion, but their actions suggest Jesus is merely a prop for votes.
Which is more important, bragging about your religion, or living it? The press was puzzled when McCain praises a Christian guard’s help as an example of what is a Christian, not noticing McCain refrains from bragging of his own actions as a POW risking a beating to hold church services. Similarly, Palin doesn’t have to brag she is prolife. The press hasn’t noticed that her youngest son has Down’s syndrome, but word will get around.
Six: The conservative base of the Republican party might actually get out and vote. Many of them hate McCain almost as much as Obama because he has been too cooperative with Democrats on immigration and other issues. The choice of Palin might change their mind.
So despite the pundits, this is a good choice. It’s just that the pundits of the left and right are so busy playing politics that they haven’t noticed.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackAre you freaking kidding me? McCain doesn’t live his religion - he cheated on his first wife with Cindy. Barack Obama and Joe Biden actually live the family values the Republicans pretend to preach.
Second, as a woman I am NOT happy with Sarah Palin. And I’ve no problem with gun rights or some of her other issues, but her extreme view on abortion - that it would be outlawed in cases of rape, meaning I would be forced to give birth to my rapist’s child - just because she has ovaries, she is NO feminist and no friend to women as far as I’m concerned.
Mary, do you really think it morally acceptable to kill one’s baby because her father is a rapist? Governor Palin’s position is the only honest one for a pro-lifer to take. The idea of punishing the child for the sins of the father fell out of favor a long time ago. We would not countenance a mother killing her newborn because it was conceived by rape, so, if, as pro-lifers contend and as biology confirms, the baby in utero is as much a person as the newborn–or the toddler, or the octagenarian–logic requires our moral position not change based on the accident of whether the baby makes it through the birth canal before the homicide is committed.
Palin is a crackpot who doesn’t believe in science and wants creationism taught in schools. She would criminalize abortion, forcing her extreme beliefs on other women. Seventy percent of America believes that safe abortion should be available to victims of rape.
Also, I hear Rush Limbaugh picked her.
Yep. Just the woman we want a heartbeat away from the presidency. I think McCain was not thinking with his brain but with his…other parts. He does that, you know.
Ah, I see the Daily Kos talking points are being posted. They don’t have Hillary to ridicule anymore, so I guess Palin will be the next one for them to mock.
Luckily, Palin, like Hillary, has more cojones than Obama.
Yep, I agree. As a (female)person, not a feminist, I really like Sarah Palin from what I have read sofar about her. What a delightful pleasant surprise coming from the good old boy’s club. Also have some devilish pleasure that the Obama campaign has to be very careful in their attacks on her or they p’ss off the Hillary voters.
I live in Pa. five minutes from were Biden grew up, women here vote for logic not dreams. While no candiate will ever be perfect for everyone there are many Roman Catholic republicans and democrats who see the neccesity of pro-choice and still welcome Palin with open arms.
Senator McCain’s God given ability to rationalize and debate liberal protocol will prove to be the biggest asset our country needs to unify democrats and republicans alike. McCain’s choice of Gov. Palin another maverick with the conviction to stand up against her own party to stop wasteful spending is an excellent choice. Why vote for Obama’s unrealistic promises? Vote for what can be logically accomplished – not for the delusional promises of a very intellectual but egotistical dreamer.
Hi Patricia,
I also live in PA, am an agnostic and pro choice. There are many parents, religious or not, who would not abort because of Down syndrome.I had my second child at 43 and after the amniocentesis results came back(normal), was spared such agonizing decision.
People with Down Syndrome are wonderful loving human beings,at least all the ones I have met. Never met a parent(s) that regretted having such a precious child. My dream team for the Dems would have been Hillary with Dennis Kucinich(another Roman Catholic LOL) as running mate. Guess I am non standard.
I do applaude the selection of Sarah Palin, not just because she is female but as an overall person. Truly a breath of fresh air.
Great post Nancy!
John McCain —-
Have you lost your mind? You have lost this vote.
The Republican party enjoys the participation on thousands of articulate, intelligent, EXPERIENCED women……….
Palin is nothing more than a bossy typical PTA president and does nothing to represent an intelligent grasp of the future and the country.
I am offended and disgusted - you deserve to lose the bid for President.
Sarah Palin is the Quintessential Stepford Wife: She is anti-choice, even in cases of RAPE and INCEST. Voting for Palin is not a vote for feminism, whatever else it may be:
Palin sued when the government wouldn’t let Big Oil drill in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. Meanwhile, Big Oil has Alaskan leases 3 times the size of the ANWR adjacent to that preserve!
Palin thinks it is perfectly OK to use helicopters and high-powered rifles to exterminate wolves, an endangered species, before going into their dens and blasting their cubs. Why? So sport-hunters can have the elk and caribou.
The only lives Palin cares about are the Big Oil Low-lives. The only green Palin cares about is the kind that she can spend on fur coats.
Obviously, any hick can be a governor. The hack in the Oval Office used to be governor of Texas, lest we forget.
Palin has no legal background. Palin’s constituency of 9,000 Alaskans does not compare to Chicago, its suburbs and the state of Illinois, a diverse and densely populated city and state. Palin has never served on a Senate committee. Furthermore, Palin’s ethics are under investigation.
One month ago, Palin was quoted as saying “Just what exactly does a Vice President do all day?” She doesn’t “get it” either.
Can someone like that be expected to restore The Constitution and get the diplomatic results that Obama did in one day in Iraq?
No, and that’s exactly why McClone picked her: she’s pretty, and she’ll stay out of his way.
Ms Laurel, I could not have said it better!
The only note I have is to remind voters that Obama taught Consitutional Law for 12 years.
