Everyone has been following the Caylee Anthony story, a Google News Search on Caylee, her wacko mother Casey, or the idiot Bounty Hunter Leonard Padilla that for reasons only Fox News knows (that’s speculation, but watch this space) that sprung the stupid woman from jail, and you will see literally thousands of stories, from a multitude of countries.
The Giovanni Gonzalez story is just as heartbreaking, but almost no news organization has picked up on it. In fact Giovanni’s story parallels Caylee in an uncanny way.
Caylee went missing after supposedly being dropped off at a babysitter, Giovanni went missing after being left with his father for two days. Casey Anthony’s car was said to smell of dead bodies, Ernesto Gonzalez has a cut on his hand that he refuses to explain, and the cops have a house mop that the cops think has blood on it and has then been bleached. Neither can offer any sensible answers, and both were held on a $500,000 bond.
That is where the stories diverge, Casey Anthony is out on bail, Ernesto Gonzalez sits in jail. The press is all over the Anthony story, but almost no one outside of Lynn, Massachusetts has heard about this story. There is no idiot Bounty Hunter involved. Hey Dog Chapman, this could be your salvation! You and Beth could stick up the $500k bond and be famous again!
So what is the difference between the two cases? Call me a cynic, but it sure would be easy to pull the race card out, Caylee is (or at least I hope that ‘is’ is the correct term) a very pretty white 3 year old girl, Giovanni is a five year old boy who is Hispanic.
I came across the Gonzalez case quite by accident, not too many people dig around in Google like I do, for the latest on this sad story check out Jan’s article.
Oh, and for the latest idiocy from Leonard Padilla (and it involves some bad language, and his apparent hate for rock music) check this out. As for the idiot mother, you won’t believe what she has being doing with a cop!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI am glad to see that some other folks are starting to pick this up. There are a couple of folks around that have been writing about it but the fact is that coverage has been pretty slim. You can’t really blame the media although it would be easy to do. They report on what sells and in America a missing Hispanic doesn’t sell.
The reason that it would be easy to pull out the race card is because most of us are “racist” in one form or fashion. We want to watch what’s exciting and attractive and a Hispanic family with a missing little boy just isn’t all that attractive.
I don’t believe this has anything to do with race. I believe it all has to do with the family and how they bring it to the public’s attention. Obviously the Anthony’s are wanting to be in the lime light and have brought all this attention to themselves. And now that they are not getting the positive attention they want, they want the press to go away.
I for one am white and it breaks my heart to see a child missing or worse no matter what their race is.
I don’t feel this has anything to do with whether the missing child is white, black, hispanic or purple, cute or not and to say that implies that ALL of the viewing public are heartless and uncaring and I don’t think that is the case.
My obsession with the Caylee Anthony disappearance came about because of it being aired on the Network I watch and because of blogging on the Networks related Blog Site.
Tell me, has the mother or any other relative (even the father) of little Giovanni made personal pleas to the media. Has anyone in Giovanni’s family been in constant contact with media begging them to carry their sad story of where their little Giovanni is.
It could be that NO ONE knows about little Giovanni being missing because (1) that is how his family prefers it, especially if they already feel 100% for sure that little Giovanni’s FATHER is responsible for his disappearance, or (2) they prefer NOT to get the MEDIA all frenzied up about it.
Many a times on the blog sites I am on it is US the general public who picks up on a story and then sends e-mails into our Blog host for them to cover it on their news program and to keep us up-dated.
The Caylee Anthony case is so easily to become obsessed about because of all the lies, cover-ups and the amount of “players” in the whole unfortunate situation.
Why don’t YOU contact your favorite T.V. station and ask them for help in getting little Giovanni’s face on the screens across America and see what happens.
Indeed, there are thousands and thousands of cases of missing children each and every day, so much so that it would be impossible for each little child to make the headlines BUT I believe the majority of them could if the FAMILY involved sought the help from the general public via our network/cable t.v channels and other media outlets.
Please also keep in mind, that mentally it is very, very draining on US the general public to get involved and continue to follow a missing child’s case from start to finish and be able to keep up with developments in one particular case, let alone thousands and thousands.
Remember too, that once a missing child’s case is introduced to the general public then it means that the family of the missing child will also have to be involed in order to supply us with the information needed in order to help.
I for one am offended that YOU believe that the race of a child or their physical appearance is what pulls at the heartstrings of people in these missing children cases - it is NOT. It is the whole circumstances surrounding the missing child that gets us hooked and such information can only be put out there by the family members of the missing child in the first place.
If my child goes missing YOU can be assured that I will have his/her picture on the television screens everynight until they are reunited with me BUT that is something that I as the parent have to do in order to keep the story going until the child is found - one way or the other NOT the media all by itself.
Please, please lay that RACE card to rest once and for all — it is NOT needed in this day and age anymore!!
P.S. I am trying my hardest to find a picture of little Giovanni linked to your story BUT from what I can see YOU did not include a photo of little Giovanni — that would have been helpful, considering the content and implications of your story to begin with.
I’m going to repeat what I said in another bloggernews article - there is NO coverage on Caylee Anthony here in NY. I do google searches on her to get news. I do the same for Giovanni Gonzalez. BOTH stories interest me.
Also, according to Caylee’s story, her father is Hispanic. You need to get your facts straight. Stop trying to create racism where there is none.
My son is just like Caylee - he’s Puerto Rican from his father, and Swedish and Irish from me (what I’m sure YOU would call “WHITE” - oh, the horror!), and he looks white as can be, with big blue eyes. It’s not until people hear his last name that anyone realizes that he’s “hispanic” - But, luckily, his father and I teach him to see people for WHO they are, rather than for the color of their skin.
It’s good of you to try to get the word out about Giovanni Gonzalez, but you’re going about it the wrong way.
it was Cindy Anthony that got the media involved in her case. When she 1st found out that Caylee was missing she went to every possible source to make it public, she was doing interview after interview at her request. It wasn’t until after everyone starting hearing what a nut job Casey is & started to realize Casey is to blame and the media turned on them that she decided she didn’t like the publicity. The Anthony family stirred up this hornets nest.
One more thing… I do think it is sad that people are not volunteering to help look for little Giovanni like they are Caylee. God bless both of those babies.
I had a strange thought. How uncanny that this boy’s name is Giovanni Gonzalez and Casey insists a Zenaida Gonzalez has Caylee, or did as of June 9th or 15th or whatever.
Moving on, I would have been equally if not more captivated by the Gonzalez case if it had received any coverage.
I wonder actually if little Giovanni’s family is actually more sane and less whacko than the Anthonys. They know Giovanni’s father is somehow involved, they at least now know he’s a whack job that belongs in jail. He’s there now and they know they can only hope he is convinced to confess so they can have closure about Giovanni.
If they don’t think he’s out there, they may just be bright enough to grieve privately and not seek the circus that Cindy Anthony has brought on her family.
I would love to see both these children come home safely, but I hope they are happy and free wherever they are.
Call Nancy Grace! She will find the time to get the story in about Giovanni. I know she seems obsessed with Caylee, but she has in the past brought to light other cases even when she is in the middle of something like Caylee’s case!!
Barack Obama is not prepared to lead and represent the United States.
It has nothing to do with his color.
Likewise race and ethnicity have nothing to do with the apparent disparity in coverage of the two
stories you cite.
Put the facts out there instead of pulling the race card.
I think the bigger issue isn’t race, but the fact that Caylee was supposedly gone for 4 weeks before her grandmother reported her missing (No, not her MOTHER, but her GRANDMOTHER - after FOUR weeks). That’s the issue that caught my attention. How does a mother NOT report her daughter missing after 40 minutes, much less 4 weeks! If I dropped my daughter off at the babysitters, and I was unable to locate said babysitter after that, I’d not only call the police, but I’d call the FBI, CIA, Marines, Interpol…whoever I could.
It is disgusting to think that someone could actually believe in this day and age that a missing child isn’t getting coverage because they are not white or cute. Caylee is a beautiful little girl, yes…But Giovanni is an adorable little boy. I have three children ages 6, 2 and 1. Any time a little angel goes missing it tears me up inside and I want to, no, have to know every little detail until the precious baby is home or the family gets their closure and can grieve. Oh, by the way…. Trenton Duckett is a beautiful, white baby boy. I had heard nothing about him until they parallelled his case with Caylee’s. Get over the race card, we have an African American presidential candidate. That in itself should show how far this country has come.
God bless Caylee, Giovanni, and all of the missing children. Bring them to peace or bring them home.
I also read about the Giovanni case (On America’s Most Wanted website) it is sad that he hasn’t gotten even remotely the media coverage that little Caylee has - as much as I would hope they are found safe and sound, the evidence and the time that passes by makes me think the worst has happened. As the mother of a 4yr old I just can’t fathom the thought of another parent hurting their child.
here in Pa I have not heard about this case or the Caylee Anthony case.
i learn all about it online or on Greta & Nancy Grace or Geraldo.
There is no full coverage here.
The only possible racism I get from this story is that Casey Anthony has described her nanny as Hispanic which is not making Hispanics look too good right now. Remember the Susan Smith case? She claimed a Black man took her car and babies. I think the Hispanic community in Florida should be outraged.
Are You SURE the Gonzalez family wants such attention? Do they want to to stoop to such levels as the “OTHER” family? Is there a gag order in place? There are BETTER searches for Giovanni than there are for Caylee, how come your article does not mention that? Get ALL your facts before you start reporting controversy. If you are going to write, be a real writer, we have enough wannabes & fakes in this world, and people stooping to the Anthony’s level! I give MAJOR kudos to the Gonzalez family, who ARE a class act(!) for keeping things where they are. You unfortunately are trying to drag them down, that’s what is sad…
I too wondered why the mainstream media with the exception of the Boston Globe has little interest in Giovanni Gonzalez.
I am from the Boston area and know the story of little Giovanni. He is on the news here but I have not seen any coverage of Caylee’s case, only on the national media like Nancy Grace and Greta. Giovanni’s case is heartbreaking and listening to his poor mother, one can only hope that his father sent him away to be with family but unfortunately the facts aren’t leading that way.
I think that Caylee got more media attention because the public all had the same reaction, What? Why? The moment Giovanni went missing, his mother knocked on doors, called the police and let herself be interviewed. Casey, on the other hand, joined a hot body contest, got drunk and put on a charade that the nanny had Caylee and continued this story even after she was caught up in her lies.
I don’t think the media coverage has anything to do with race. Giovanni’s mother has conducted herself like a concerned grieving mother desperate to know where her beautiful boy is while Casey only thought about herself. It boggles our minds and we can’t wrap our minds around the fact that a mother doesn’t care and would harm her child. What is the difference between the cases:
Giovanni is a loved child whose mother doesn’t deserve what she is going through.
Casey is a monster who never deserved Caylee.
Caylee would be alive if her grandparents hadn’t been so bent on closing their eyes to what a horrible piece of excrement their pathologically lying daughter Casey is.
At least Giovanni’s dad is in jail.
Casey must have super p*ssy powers. If she were ‘ugly’, would so many men be willing to lie for her, hide the truth for her, provide bail for her?
the main reason why everyone has heard of the anthony case and not this case is because (1) the missing Caylee wasn’t reported until a month later - that causes more ears to turn and more people to question why and want to follow it more than something that happens almost everday as with the case of Giovanni. What happened with him is normal and the right procedures were followed. He wasn’t missing but for 2 days before they started looking - not 31. Also, (2) the anthony case was broadcasted everywhere because of the grandparents. I don’t believe it would have been such a big case had it not been for grandma getting the media attention. We all do wish that the children will return home, but if in the case that they won’t because something happened to them, they sure are better off now than they would be here on this sorry, messed up world.
No, it’s because Caylee is white, even with a latino father — she’s white.
That is pitiful. A child is a child. There is no race to children and there is no race involved when a child goes missing. And with all the publicity Caylee has gotten she still isn’t home. So what is the difference? I could understand the race card being pulled if after all this Caylee was home, but she isn’t. Worry more about finding the babies and less about who is famous and who isn’t and why.
caylee’s father may be ‘latino’, but latino isnt a race [no more a race than ‘american’ is]…so for all we know, her father may be a white latino. And unlike California, florida actually has alot of white latinos [mostly cubans]. and going by her looks, thats probably the case.
anyways american media is biased towards white children but then again the majority are white people in USA still. if this was mexico im sure a mexican child missing would get more coverage than say, a white child, in the mexican press.
Its pretty obvious the kid is dead anyway by now [caylee]. Mom wont talk..she did something, somewhere, somehow to her kid. open and shut case pretty much, just seems there little evidence for the DA to get a solid case going to back up the apparent guilt of the mom.
What a shame Mr. Barrett that you would use the disappearance of this precious child to ignite racial and political tensions. I live in Maine - I am white (imagine that)& I was searching online, seeking information, such as, any searches tomorrow, are more volunteers needed and the meetup time & place. You see Mr. Barrett many good & kind people come when a child is in need. They come to help find a missing child - they/I don’t give a shit what you think or feel.
As I understand it, Giovanni’s father had an arrest record. It is understandable he would not want to talk in jail. He has also been going to counseling for behavior problems. If someone actually took Giovanni from his father, no one would believe him, so why should he talk?
People are quick to spout accusations, such as a neighbor who said he had seen Giovanni’s father cursing at him in Spanish that weekend.
The good thing is, his father didn’t have a vehicle (as I’m led to believe from what I’ve read) so, it would be easy to deduce if something bad happened to Giovanni then he wouldn’t be far from his father’s apartment.
this case differs (in heart) only in that Casey NEVER reported her daughter missing until 31 days later………..when her MOM finally made Casey call 911! That in itself made this case unique and heartbreaking and grabbed immediately at America’s heart. All “missing children” cases are important! This one has been full of twists and turns, like a murder-mystery I’ve never encountered.
humm interesting…. wasn’t the baby sitters middle name gonzales? or am i just thinking that for some reason? Will have to go look back at the articles
a child is a child regardles of race or any other thing
