Season One

I went to a private school for most of my elementary school years.  It wasn’t like all those private schools you see on Gossip Girl, more like a madrassa for Christian fundamentalists.  I left brainwashed into a far-right political and scientific mindset.  To be perfectly honest, I enjoyed public school much more.  But if you really want to see what fun at school is all about, you need to watch the first season of this new show out on DVD.

Starting this August 19th, now available on DVD from Nelvana International and Paramount Home Entertainment comes the first season of zany adventures in that famous sideways school.  Wayside School – Season One is ready to burst into your living room in a hundred crazy ways and take you off into so many wacky ways of fun.

This show is based off of the best selling book series of the same name by Louis Sachar.  Wayside School is a school which was accidentally built 30 stories tall instead of 30 rooms wide.  Not only is the school 30 stories tall, but it’s completely crazy.  Cows roam free, there are elevators which work only when you can’t use the stairs, there are a group of super friends which transform into clones of the janitor in case of an emergency.  The principal tries to run a home shopping network out of the school, students get to grade their teachers, the building is held up by a piece of paper and school elections are decided by a rousing game of dodgeball.

There are not exactly any special features on this DVD, but the episodes are viewable on a full screen format and you can listen to audio tracks in English, Spanish and French, so that’s something at least.

I have not read any of the books this show is based upon, but both discs of this first season turned out to be quite enjoyable.  This is the kind of stuff that kids totally wish would happen in their own schools.  My school was so boring that I would make up stories of things that happened that day, fantastic tales which were obviously not true.  If your kids went to this nutso school, those stories might actually be true.

This Wayside is worth stopping at.

This DVD is available at Amazon.com.
