The Associated Press is reporting that Barack Obama will name Democratic Senator Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice-presidential nominee. The report has now been confirmed by the Obama campaign.

The unnamed official spoke on condition of anonymity, claiming that he or she did not wish to pre-empt the campaign’s official announcement, promised for Saturday morning. One assumes that the anonymity is also to protect the individual’s job, since it is certain that the Obama campaign will be absolutely livid at having the official announcement upstaged and robbed of the drama of the moment.

CNN is claiming that multiple sources have confirmed the story. One wonders if the tip was acquired through bluff on the part of a news reporter. It is common for reporters to claim that someone else has made a statement, and then to ask for confirmation, in the hopes that a second source will then crack and issue the “confirmation”. Given that so much speculation has been swirling around the 65-year old Biden, it is not unreasonable to hypothesize that a savvy reporter played telephone tag with a few sources late Friday night and eventually got someone to spill the beans.
