Comedy Central's Kenny vs. Spenny: Volume One - UncensoredReality, depravity, humility… and admittedly… occasional hilarity. These words are a brief description of what happens when two best friends living in the same house find themselves constantly going head to head in various nonsensical challenges such as “Who Can Be Tied to a Goat the Longest?” or “First Guy to Stop Singing Loses.” Stars Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice -who share executive producing duties with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone – and a host of others - torture each other relentlessly until the competition is over and one of them gets humiliated. That’s actually the entire plot-line, and believe it or not, it’s already lasted for five seasons.

The set-up is pretty straightforward: A competition is declared, such as “Who Can Eat More Meat?”, and then the guys go at it, attempting to prove themselves the victor while simultaneously painting their opponent as a loser. But with the challenges that these guys compete in, it’s hard to declare a winner or a loser. For example, are you really a winner if you are filmed willingly sticking the business end of a bike pump up your butthole and pumping away? In this specific case, Kenny (the bike-pumper) does win the competition (“Who Can Blow the Biggest Fart?”) but it’s not much of a victory… unless you count not having Canada’s fart champion breaking wind on your face as winning… and I do. But there’s not much glory to be had in any of these competitions, only painful, cringe-inducing hilarity.

Spenny is the quieter, more sensitive underdog to Kenny’s bullying motormouth, and their chemistry works wonders. What’s really a wonder, though, is that Spenny sticks with the whole idea of the show, despite the fact that he almost always loses the competition and finds himself frustrated beyond words on a daily basis. (“He’s got me so aggravated I can’t even fart!” he declares during one challenge (guess which one) and that remains a pretty common theme throughout these 10 episodes. While Spenny sees each challenge as a new chance to prove himself, Kenny almost immediately looks for a loophole around the rules or a way to trick Spenny into giving up. On the episode “First Guy to Get a Boner Loses” Kenny gets a numbing shot in his genitalia to ensure that it will be physically impossible for him to become aroused. Is it fair? Probably not. Is it funny to watch Spenny trying his best to win an impossible challenge? Yes.

Kenny vs. Spenny isn’t for everybody. It’s not even for most people. This is reality television at its most perverse, though the guys of Jackass might have something to say about that. To watch two grown men throw caution to the wind and intentionally humiliate themselves, there’s hardly a better place to turn, but if you’re looking for subtle humor and political commentary, look elsewhere. Believe me, these guys won’t be offended.
