Yes these characters are all intelligent young women but beyond that they are driven by radically different motivations. For some reason we tend to be unable to find nuance and difference among her characters once we have pigeon holed them as "sarcastic" meaning intelligent or witty. Perhaps being typecast into playing only strong, whole, intelligent women is not a bad thing. I disagree that Ellen plays the same character in Hard Candy, Juno and Smart people.
