Vince Li is accused of stabbing and beheading Tim McLean, 22, who was a total stranger to him while he was sleeping in the seat next to him on a Greyhound bus going from Edmonton to Winnipeg on July 30. Li has been charged with second degree murder for the murder of McLean.
He stood up in court yesterday in Manitoba asking for it all to end. He stood there and quietly said, “Please kill me.†The court room was filled with reporters and the victim’s family.
Judge Michael Chartier ordered that Li is sent for a psychiatric assessment to determine if he is fit to stand trial. The judge wants to know if he can be held criminally responsible for his actions. So fat the man has refused to talk to a lawyer.
When he was arrested Li was carrying a plastic bag that contained a human nose, an ear, and a part of a mouth all believed to be Tim McLean’s. Officers witnessed him hacking at the corpse and eating pieces of his body. RCMP officers also reported hearing Li say, “I have to stay on the bus forever.â€
It has been reported to the courts that at some time or another Li spent 4 days in a Canadian psychiatric facility but they haven’t found out where or when it was suppose to have happened.
Joyce Dalman, Crown lawyer, said that Li has not told anyone any explanation for what happened on the bus. “No explanation, no note, almost nothing verbal,†she said. “There is nothing to indicate it’s anything other than a random and unprovoked attack.â€
Theglobeandmail.com reports that new details have come out about how Vince Li spent the 24 hours before he killed McLean. They say he spent the night on a public bench. Later he supposedly sold his laptop computer to a teenager who found personal letters and photos on it as well as a note that expressed his feelings of guilt for leaving China and confusion about his life in Canada.
The teenager, Darren Beatty, 15, found more than 20 resumes. One was for a police service, one for McDonald’s, one for Wal-Mart. He also found dozens of photos including several of a black military plane they he thought was taken by an amateur in mid-air.
He found a letter in Mandarin, which was translated with Google’s translator that looked to be addressed to someone in China. The letter said he was happy to be free living under beautiful free skies but that he felt guilty for leaving China and that everything in Canada was not as he expected.
Li boarded the Greyhound Bus in Erickson, not in Brandon as was previously reported, around 6 pm. He sat down near the front of the bus. After he took a cigarette break when the bus stopped in Brandon, he moved to the back of the bus and sat next to McLean.
Greyhound spokeswoman, Abby Wambaugh says that Greyhound has scrapped an ad campaign that extolled the peaceful worry-free upside of bus travel. The punch line of the ass was, “There’s no reason you’ve never heard of bus rage.†She says the company feels that the ad which came out last year could be offensive and it is no longer appropriate. She said some of the ads are still up but Greyhound wants them all to be removed as quickly as possible.

Oh that’s the way to handle it judge, so if he can’t; you going to let him walk? Let’s give him the opportunity again to go butcher someone else, what a panzie judge.
He is responsible as much as any sane human being would be responsible, he pre-meditated that murder, he had to of thought it out. If he could logicaly write letters on his laptop computer about life in Canada, and feeling guilty about leaving China, then he knows what is going on.
Give him the death sentence and be done with it already.
Give him what he wants, Kill him.
Clearly, “Shocked in the U.S” knows nothing of either the legal system OR of psychiatry. Just because someone can write on a computer does not mean that they can’t later have a flare-up of their mental disorder — a psychotic break or and episode of paranoid schizophrenia. Also, anyone with an ounce of sense would know that the judge isn’t going to let him walk. He would be found “criminally insane” and be placed in high security mental institution — no walk in the park, by any means!
I am so sickened by a society that fails all of its people so badly. We allowed this to happen by failing the mentally ill and this is why someone died.
Send him back to China, let them sentence him for his crime, he won’t be alive one week after they sentence him.
The judge should be hung for saying what he said, they should torture this guy worse than anyone could ever imagine, Im talkin toe nails getting pulled teeth getting pulled, scaping of the gums, burning, this Us government is so horrible, we need to torture people that commit murder, its the only way to get through to some of these rejects that live hear

The judge should be HUNG for SAYING something? You think he should be killed? Seriously? Statements like that are not only ignorant, but dangerous and place you on a similar playing field as any murderer who decided they had a good enough reason to take someone else’s life.

He is a Slimeball in society, there is no place for scum like this. I don’t care how sane or insane he is. The point here is that he killed and innocent man (a young man) for no aparent reason, and, he gives the court system no explanation for his actions.
Why tolerate him? get rid of the slimeball, he wants to die so let him die. All this does is send a message to the rest of the slimeballs like him that they can kill for no reason and get pampering.
They should “Waterboard” him and then find the answer to why he did it, that will get it out of him. We need to start resorting back to our roots of Old English society and how they dealt with criminals. If we did that I believe crime would drop by 75%.
Nuff-said, pretty much said it all…right on! legal system is too easy on criminals, its almost hard to tell who is the victim anymore. I do wonder how forgiving the judge, jury or phyciatrist would be if it was their loved one killed this way. its obvious Li is insane, and it is sad as well. but i doubt someone like that could be brought back to reality, and should we make tax payers keep such a person alive. Tim’s rights to have children, fall in love, grow old, be there when his family needs him,laugh, and possibly make this world a better place was taken from him…I just hope his and his families rights arent forgotten in the haste to “save” Li, who is really already gone…
If this was one of my family members that was killed by this scum bag, I don’t care how many Sherifs were guarding him, I would get as close as I could and shove a U.S Marine K-Bar knife through his throat, then go to jail smiling.

So, he kills someone, and everyone thinks killing him is the answer? If we kill him what makes us any better then him. Why would we all go down to his level and become what we apparently hate.
There is no reason why we can’t try and understand his hardships and what he is going through. Sure, it’s a bit… brutal and I don’t agree with anything he did, but lets not turn into animals. Logic dictates the process to be taken and hopefully the system works.

if any of you read up on basic psychology you’d know the killing was not premeditated and he was in a psychotic state at the time. He was smoking a cigarette before he got back on the bus so the voices would stop. Clearly they didn’t. In a psychotic state, if someone thinks they’re doing God’s will, they really do believe they are doing God’s will and can talk to God. Once the psychotic state has passed, the person can act and think relatively normal, but is still left to live with the consequences of their actions.
He’s mentally ill, depressed, and living within an unfamiliar culture. Yes, the killing was gruesome and horrible but people like him need help. If proper mental services had been available to him he probably would never had killed McLean. Get it through your heads that his brain DOES NOT FUNCTION NORMALLY.
This also happened in my home town. A little boy was mutilated and beheaded by a man with paranoid schizophrenia. If proper care were provided for these people then we wouldn’t see these types of random murders happen so much. Thanks a lot, Reagan.
I am so upset about the killing on the Grey Hound bus I can’t get it out of my head. I am most upset with the fact that man may walk free in a year. I think the way the law works in Canada stinks. I don’t care if that man was insane or not, he should spend the rest of his life in prision or a mental hospital. I have never been so upset with a story in my life. I think the way the officers handled the whole situation was wrong and I hope Mr. McLean’s family wins the lawsuit. My heart goes out to Tim McLean’s family and friends.
Hope the officer’s are ashamed of themselves.
