I wasn't locked out in the latest fiasco but a couple of months ago I was locked out for two weeks because I was classified as a spammer. Not cool at all.

I have been so upset by the loss of my blog I have imported it to Wordpress, and the data (75%) that survived will serve as the foundation of what I should have been doing a loooong time ago, mirroring my content, and hastening my search to replace Google.

I don't like what I have seen of Wordpress so far because it won't let me use javascript and flash from any source I want. And you tube playlists won't work.

Bottom line...Google lost my trust yesterday. They'll have to work twice as hard to regain it due to their lack of acknowledgment of the problem.

This is the 5th time I've been locked out.

The anti-spam robot ran amok sometime early on Wednesday July 30, but Blogger did not post an official acknowledgment of the issue until after 3 PM Pacific time Friday Aug 1. By that time 1000s of blogs had been affected and the Blogger Help forums were full of posts with reports of legitimate blogs of all types which had been affected.

What seems to have surfaced in this incident is the ambiguous nature of the relationship between Blogger and the blogging community. First, Blogger provides a free platform for content. Second it gets in return a long tail of niche subjects for targeted advertising. Third, Google, which owns and operates Blogger, gets new data for search indexing to target those ads.

What is ambiguous is whether Google or Blogger feel they have any accountability to the Bloggers, or whether those of us who use the service are simply disposable and replaceable commodities. If it is the latter, then, if you have a serious blog, it is time to consider a move to a paid service where the contractual relationship includes service contracts and so forth.

There is no service contract between Bloggers and Google. The so-called "terms of service" are all on Google's side deployed by the firm's lawyers to protect it from liability. My view is that Google needs to step up and be accountable for its performance in operating Blogger. It is called management. It is a test of Google's maturity whether it will change its behavior toward the blogging community. As NASA would say, failure here is not an option.
