Earlier this week workers at the AV Nackawic Mill in New Brunswick found themselves exposed to a potentially deadly substance known as asbestos. The incident occurred after some side walling was punctured – it turned out that the walling contained asbestos, and due to the risk of health problems around one hundred workers had to be sent home from the mill.
Asbestos is a potentially deadly substance and a known carcinogenic, which can cause a variety of health problems through exposure to airborne dust and fibers. This includes scarring of the lungs, serious respiratory problems, and a form of deadly cancer known as mesothelioma, for which there is still no known cure.
According to report a cleanup is now underway at the mill following the incident. However, air testing has also taken place, and apparently showed that there were no asbestos particles in the air. A site official said that workers did not need to worry.
He said: “This is low-grade asbestos material that’s used throughout the mill. All the areas have this kind of cladding … As far as I’m concerned, they don’t need to be concerned.” A union official said: “A lot of the guys do have concerns over the safety of the mill, although I think it would be inaccurate to say the mill is an unsafe site.”
