Hi Hugh.
My Name is Paul Nixon. As an artist and sculptor I agree and support your article. This country abounds with great talent of which I feel very humbled to be a part of.Its accepted now for cost efficiency to bring works from overseas. As our economy worsens a good deal of our talent through frustration and hardship gives up what God has gifted them with, to take salary jobs to survive.
Your's.
Sincerely.
Paul Nixon.

The author absolutely right. I live in the UK and am similarly concerned not just about foreign imports but also about the proliferation of copies (printed and cast) of great works from the past appearing in churches. This seems to take place to the detriment of comissioning original artworks from local or national artists (or any artists). This is particularly tragic as great artowork and patronage of liturgical art is one of traditions of the catholic church that has made it justifiably famous.
It is also difficult to understand as it is one of the specified priestly responsibilities to engage with artists. Possibly part of the reason for this is the general demise of sacred and liturgical art in our cultures? To an extent, artists have also let down down our sacred spaces with artwork generally becoming about the individual ego and less about community or sacred values. As an artist I am attempting to recify this in a small part by training to be a liturgical artist myself.
Thanks for a great article and keep up the good work!
