The FDA officials have announced that they have lifted the warnings on eating tomatoes of all kinds as of Thursday  They do however continue to warn the elderly and the children along with those that have compromised immune systems to avoid the jalapeno and Serrano peppers though. Raw jalapeno peppers are used quite a bit in making salsa.

They are reporting that the salmonella outbreak reached 1220 confirmed cases in 42 states with at least 242 people hospitalized.  That isn’t counting the cases that were not reported.

Dr. David Acheson associate commissioner for foods at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration  said, “We still do not know where the original contamination was.” He says the ban has been lifted because it’s highly unlikely that any tomatoes that were on the market at the start of the outbreak, which started in April, remain on the market. They haven’t found any signs of salmonella in the tomatoes on any of the farms that they investigated.

The people that reported being sick ranged from the ages of 1 year old to 99 years old and 50% are female. About 40,000 cases of salmonellosis are reported in the U. S. alone each year. About 600 people die each year after being infected.
