Colorado Springs is home to 10,000's of returning Combat veterans with PTSD and TBI issue's that manifest itself in criminal behaviour. We are in the process of setting up a Veterans Court and it will hopefully be on line in a few short months . Often during the discussions at so many Veteran initiatives groups, this issue was seen as one of the most serious facing our communities and our Soldiers/Veterans. These young heroes gave us their bodies , their hearts and their minds , and now because they are impaired from their injuries and often act out in criminal ways , we want to take away the very freedom they gave to us. A nation's character can be seen in the way it takes care of it's veterans , here America has a long way to go . A drug court is a great way to show these heroes that their nation does care , does understand what it has taken from them and will give them the help they need. People have criticize this as preferential treatment , I say if we can give help to those who willfully and illegally chose to addict themselves to illegal drugs an opportunity at redemption , we certainly owe our nation's Sentinels of Freedom the same. I am a former Marine and know what it means to never leave our fallen behind , but does this nation know it to must adhere to these same noble principles. I now work as a counselor to our nations most seriously injured and ill veterans , the Army Wounded Warrior program here in Colorado . I hope and pray we as a state have the courage to do the right thing as they have in Buffalo. Semper Fi
