A woman from the UK has won compensation after claiming that she contracted a deadly asbestos related cancer from hugging her father when she was a child. The woman, Debbie Brewer, claims that she was exposed to asbestos when she hugged her father when she was younger.

Her father worked at Devonport Dockyard in the 1960s, at which point it was owned by the Ministry of Defence. The MOD has now settled the claim with a six figure sum. Ms Brewer was diagnosed with the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma one year ago, and was given between six and nine months to live.

Ms Brewer, who has a family stated that although her own time is limited she is relieved that she received the compensation because it will help to ensure the financial future of her family.

One of her children is a ten year old son with learning difficulties, who she expressed particular concern about. She stated: “I want to be here for him and I don’t know if I will be, but I intend to be here and fight this cancer.”
