The 1st of April has been officially declared as Asbestos Awareness Day in Montgomery , according to a recent report. The declaration was made by the Mayor, Bobby Bright, who is signed a proclamation to this effect in a ceremony at his offices.

A senate resolution has also been put in place that not only declares 1 st April as Asbestos Awareness Day but also the week of 1 st to 7 th April as Asbestos Awareness Week. The aim of the Asbestos Awareness Day is to try and educate people about asbestos and the dangers that it can pose to their health.

The project is part of a campaign by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization. Asbestos was once widely used in different industries and applications as a result of its remarkable fire and heat resistant properties, but several decades ago the true risks of exposure to this substance became widely known.

Long term exposure to airborne asbestos dust and fibers can result in a range of health issues, including respiratory problems, scarring of the lungs, and a form of asbestos related cancer known as mesothelioma.
