There is little doubt that the second Vatican council was a major episode in Catholic self-image. Could it also be true that after the Second World War, people re-evaluated their position in the world and that membership of a multi-cultural world where there were many people of good-will. Those they met were often deeply committed in the care of their neighbour whether they were Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Christian or devoted to another creed or none and whose lives were to be appreciated and emulated while their beliefs were different. Our God may be identical if hidden in variant credal beliefs. Authenticity in an agnostic can leave us all wondering.
