It’s tempting to dismiss this as typical health nannyism — Bill Clinton has struck a deal with food companies to cut down on junk snacks in schools. But actually, a plan like this is a good idea. Students are not adults, and they really do need health nannies.
Schools often have lucrative vending machines in their lunch rooms, and parents aren’t around to regulate chips-and-soda intake. School staff isn’t about to supervise eating habits either (after all it’s the school’s machines and the school’s profits), so the only real way to solve the problem is by responsibly stocking the machines. The cherry on top is that the deal is completely voluntary, with no government involvement.
